Everyone knows that it's next to impossible to make in Hollywood. The competition is fierce, and getting work is all about looking the right way, sounding the right way, and being at the right place at the right time. That being said, it's pretty remarkable that an actress like Gabourey Sidibe has come as far as she has. She's unconventional, unexpected, and has already achieved more than many young starlets do in a lifetime.
Of course, one of the issues that constantly surrounds her is her weight. Though Sidibe is proud of her body, people can't help but comment on it -- and sometimes, the commentary is just plain mean. Still, it seems to roll off her back and she continues to be unbothered, but she's begun to take her health into consideration. This is Gabourey Sidibe.
She's an actress who shot to fame after her performance in Precious, a movie about an inner-city girl who tries to get herself out of the cycle of poverty.
The role earned her an Oscar nomination.
She was handpicked out of 400 other girls for the title role, and the ultimate decision was made by none other than Oprah herself.
Since then, Gabourey has continued to act.
Most notably is her recurring role on Empire, wherein she plays record label assistant Becky.
The one thing that's so great about Gabourey is that she totally bucks the Hollywood stereotypes.
She's a plus-size black woman getting work in a world where women with her body type are often excluded from everything.
And she's totally unapologetic about her size.
Why shouldn't she be? It's part of what got her the role as Precious in the first place, and she's committed to the idea that she shouldn't have to change for anyone.
She's also handled haters like a pro.
Naturally,there's plenty of public criticism for someone like her -- but Gabourey always claps back in the best possible way.
For one, there was the sex scene she had on Empire.
Many people thought it was "inappropriate" to show a woman of size having sex on TV.
But Gabourey saw right through that nonsense.
"I, a plus sized, dark-skinned woman, had a love scene on primetime television. I had the most fun ever filming that scene even though I was nervous. But I felt sexy and beautiful and I felt like I was doing a good job."
Then there's the matter of what she wears to award shows.
Because the peanut gallery ALWAYS has an opinion on that.
She had the best response when people slammed her Golden Globes dress.
"To people making mean comments about my GG pics, I mos def cried about it on that private jet on my way to my dream job last night. #JK," she tweeted.
But as proud as she is of her body, she's also into stay healthy.
That's why she decided to lose a little bit of weight.
She wanted to make an overall lifestyle change.
She's a beautiful woman, but just like it's her choice to be plus size, it's her choice to lose weight, too.
And she's doing it for good reasons.
Gabourey is young, and she wants to stay healthy and working for as long as possible.
Of course, she managed to accomplish her goals.
Gabourey has lost a total of 50 pounds, and she looks amazing.
It's not about public scrutiny: It's about being healthy.
Because half the battle of feeling good about yourself is actually feeling strong and healthy in your skin.
It's amazing that in the midst of such a busy work schedule, she's been able to stick to her personal goals as well.
Not everyone could be so committed to doing all of that at once.
But for Gabourey, it's just another day of killing it.
This woman is basically unstoppable, and the fact that her success comes against all odds is truly inspiring.
Sure, she wouldn't have gotten her role as Precious if she wasn't fat.
But she's a woman who also knows the value of making good choices and living your best, healthiest life.
Still, we think she's beautiful at any size.
At 350 pounds or 150 pounds, this young actress will always have fans because she's 100% authentic.
And ultimately, this all makes her an excellent role model.
Keep changing the game, Gabourey. You're already so good at it.
