In shocking footage, it has been revealed that 5 women were tied to a tree and beaten brutally by an angry mob. The reason for this heinous attack? They were accused of being witches.

The terrible assault took place in Odisha, India where the 5 women were tied to the tree which left them helpless against the hateful mob.

People gathered by the hundreds to watch the disgusting event in which the husbands of the accused were also badly beaten by the out of control mob.

New reports from local sources said that the crowd was taking turns beating each woman.

Video recorded of the attack features the victims wearing traditional Indian clothing and surrounded by the raging mob.

One of the mob members then starts to lash the women over and over with a large tree branch. The rest of the mob beat them with their fists.

Police didn't find out what happened until they received a video recording of the incident.

After they obtained a written complaint from the accused witches, the police made it a case and began to investigate.

The assault happened in the Mayurbhanj district. This region is infamous for mob justice and accusations of witchcraft.

Many of these so-called witch hunts often end in death. Law enforcement is desperately trying to prevent this from continuing.

In 2016 a local news source reported that the most powerful members of the village practice branding women before they are brutally beaten, dragged through the village naked, and sometimes even killed.

Rajesh Prabhakar Patil, A Mayurbhanj official, told the news source:

"We have constituted a rapid response team at block and gram panchayat levels to identify vulnerable people. Apart from illiteracy, the tribal communities have strong cultural belief in witchcraft and there is an elaborate folklore around it. We have been trying to educate them on how blind belief causes harm."

The source reported that from 2011 to 2015, 47 women had been murdered based on accusations of being a witch.
