Mark Titley was filmed taking $74 from the house of a 94-year-old woman who had recently passed away, shortly after collapsing. However, despite the evidence against him, he was only given a suspended sentence.
Shameless Paramedic Filmed Stealing From Woman Just Minutes After She Died
Just minutes after an elderly patient in Shrewsbury, Shropshire passed away, a paramedic was caught on camera attempting to steal some money from her.
The 94-year-old woman collapsed in her yard on June 29, 2022, and Mark Titley, 58, was one of four paramedics called to her home.
The elderly woman who lived alone received advanced life support when the team got to Torrin Drive, but she passed away about 20 minutes later.
When Titley, a former paramedic, entered the home to look for a Do Not Resuscitate paper, he discovered a plastic box filled with cash.
Titley, of Linley Avenue, Pontesbury, was caught on camera counting the money and shoving about $74 in his trouser pocket while probably thinking he was out of sight.
But before he can flee with the cash, Titley notices the camera in the room's corner and immediately replaces it.
Titley was guilty of the crime on Tuesday, April 4 at Shrewsbury Crown Court.
He first told authorities that he intended to give the patient's relatives the money so they could keep it secure.
The late victim's son claimed he felt "sick to [his] stomach" after viewing footage of the theft.
It didn't take long for the CCTV footage of the incident to start making its way online, leaving many people speechless.
"Why on earth would you do something like this, especially in a position of trust," asked one horrified viewer.
"Cameras need to be in all home care facilities," insisted a second.
Since then, it has been confirmed by the West Midlands Ambulance Service that Titley no longer works for them as a paramedic and that he stepped down as soon as they learned of the incident.
Nathan Hudson, the chief ambulance officer, issued the following statement: "Our staff will be horrified that one of their former colleagues would do something like this.”
"We hold a position of trust when we enter someone's home and these sorts of actions rightly put a stain on all of our reputations which is deeply regrettable and makes it much harder for staff who are still working."
Titley was given an 18-week suspended prison sentence, 120 hours of unpaid labor, $658 in expenses, and a $232 victim surcharge in addition to being required to perform 120 hours of unpaid labor.
Mike Drage, the victim's son, inquired to ITV News regarding Titley's sentence: "Does anybody think 120 hours community service is actually justice for this? This is not justice. I'm going to pursue this and I'm going to ask for the courts to reconsider their actions. That's the only thing I can do."
He added: "These people that within these organizations disgrace all their other workers is abhorrent.”
"He's disgraced his fellow workers. He's disgraced the NHS. And he's disgraced humanity in his actions."
