A woman posted a shocking and graphic story about how a recent pedicure resulted in her mother losing part of her foot.
#1 Pedicures are supposed to be good for the feet.
In fact, the word itself literally means "care of the foot." But recently, getting a pedicure resulted in a woman becoming seriously injured.
#2 Shaela Leggett-Wilson's mother had received many pedicures in the past from a pedicurist she trusted.
But when her trusted pedicurist quit her job, Wilson's mother decided to book an appointment with someone new. Unfortunately, her appointment with the new pedicurist didn't go as smoothly as planned...
#3 Wilson's mother's foot became badly infected after she received the pedicure.
However, doctors had treated the woman with antibiotics to see if there was a way to save the rest of her toes and foot. The infection was so bad that they feared the entire foot may need to be removed...
#4 Fortunately, the woman responded well to antibiotics.
Shaela reported in a follow-up later that day that her mother had surgery after several days of IV antibiotics and a couple of pints of blood. For that reason the doctors were able to save most of her foot. In the end, Wilson's mother only lost her big toe.
#5 Doctors were able to save the foot, but the woman ended up losing her big toe, and is in serious pain.
Shaela said, ‘She is still in the hospital and in a lot of pain, but she is in good spirits and is thrilled to be going home soon' she wrote.
#6 After the Facebook posting, friends and others began to wonder if Shaela's mother had been diabetic or not.
People grew concerned that the issue was diabetes, as being a diabetic, would explain why she had some complications with her foot. Diabetics tend to lose circulation in the extremities and any minor cuts or scrapes can cause infections and result in loss of limbs. This can usually be avoided by keeping a regular diet and medications.
#7 Shaela says her mother is not a diabetic and has been tested while in the hospital.
She reports that she believes it was caused by something at the salon, and believes it was from dirty tools and improper usage. She said that her mother eats healthy and exercises and her diet had nothing to do with the loss of her toe. Tests from the surgery and hospital visit show no other signs of her body being ill except for that infection.
#8 Scraping dead skin off your feet can help prevent cracking and painful sores. But if you aren’t careful, a pedicure can actually lead some pretty serious health problems.
Experts have some tips to keep your feet healthy during a pedicure... First, NEVER let them turn on bubbles in the foot bath. Those whirlpools are bacteria magnets. Far from getting your feel clean, those bubbles are actually coating your feet in germs, fungus, and other microbes that can lead to infection.
#9 Second, make sure the metal tools are sterilized after EVERY client.
These tools should be left in a blue liquid that disinfects after ever use. NEVER let them use tools on you unless you know for a fact they came straight from this disinfectant. Non-metal tools should only be used once and then discarded.
