On social media, there has been outrage over a guy who has been named as one of the four candidates for a women's tech prize.
Social Media Furious After Man Announced As Finalist For Women In Technology Award
After a guy was revealed to be one of the four finalists for a women's tech award, individuals became enraged.
Women in Technology, an "industry body for women in technology and life sciences within Queensland" that "empowers women in technology and life sciences," has nominated Simon Button for the 2022 "Inspiring Diversity in STEM" award.
Simon's nomination comes as the organization launched a brand-new prize this year to honor "heroes" that promote "diversity inclusion, equality," regardless of gender, age, or origin, within the STEM community.
This award, according to the organization, is given to people "who stand alongside us in our efforts to ensure fair recognition and equal opportunity for women across STEM."
According to the Daily Mail, Professor Amy Mullens, a psychologist who works with marginalized populations, and Professor Kym Rae, a physically handicapped research fellow in Indigenous health, have both been nominated with Professor Simon.
However, when the unexpected finalist for the prize was revealed, many people were outraged.
One person wrote: “NOPE!”
Another said: “Seriously? Parks and Rec already did this, did we not learn from that?”
A third person shared: “So, you have a white man, instead of choosing, say, a black woman, native woman, or another woman of color?”
While another commented: “WTF? There are so many places for dudes to get rewarded for doing the bare minimum wtf is wrong with WiT? Not enough incredibly qualified wom*n or something? Because I’m pretty sure there’s tons of qualified wom*n.”
At the moment, Simon serves as the group chief technology officer for the interventional radiology-focused Qscan Group.
Women in Technology added: “Simon is also a founding director of Hummingbird House Foundation, a not-for-profit that successfully delivered Hummingbird House, Queensland's only children's hospice to support Queensland kids who have life-limiting illnesses.”
There is no denying that Simon has an excellent background and that he works extraordinarily hard for women and the community as a whole, but any of the other three contenders would unquestionably be a better recipient of this honor.
Why not simply nominate Morbius for "Best Original Screenplay" at the 2023 Oscars if Simon wins?
