A woman who recently inherited her father's house was permitted to enter the home to gather cherished family heirlooms left by her dad.

In 2021, Donna Kent became the owner of her late father’s house located in New York after he passed away.

It seems the house was empty for some time.

However, a squatter, who identified himself only as Kyle, had been living there for six years.

Kyle acknowledged he hadn’t been paying rent.

He mentioned he had been expecting someone to come by; however, it took Donna six years to make the trip.

Given the circumstances of his stay, Kyle welcomed Donna into the house when she finally decided to visit.

"I figured eventually somebody would show up, but nobody showed up," Kyle explained to NewsNation.

"I understood the situation clearly that somebody would come back and how would it make them feel if I told them I threw away their parents’ property."

Kyle had preserved all of Donna's late father’s belongings. She found everything untouched in the attic of the home.

The details of Donna’s relationship with her father aren’t clear. Yet, she expressed a desire that recovering these items might offer 'a glimpse into my dad’s life.'

This entire encounter was captured on video by a NewsNation film crew as Donna went through her father’s possessions.

"At this point, I’m just sort of overwhelmed to be honest," Donna remarked as she encountered the heaps of items.

During her search, she stumbled upon boxes of ashes. Initially, she worried they might belong to her father or someone else.

However, after checking the delivery address on the boxes, she concluded that the ashes were probably from pets.

"Makes me feel a little better that it’s pets and not people up here," she commented.

In addition to the ashes, Donna discovered numerous old family photographs that spanned decades and her father’s collection of baseball cards.

Despite the fact that Kyle had been living in the home without paying rent for years, Donna bore no resentment toward him.

"I am [a squatter]. Technically that is what it is, but I didn’t break in, and I didn’t come in illegally," he clarified to NewsNation.

"It’s just, they stopped coming and collecting rent."

Neither Donna nor Kyle discussed whether he would continue to stay in the property.
