The 18-year-old woman described how she had knowingly started a romantic relationship with her biological father
Warning: This article discusses incest, which may be distressing for some readers.
An 18-year-old woman recently shared the shocking details of her relationship with her biological father.
In an interview with The Cut, the woman, who chose to remain anonymous, explained how she knowingly entered a romantic relationship with her father after being estranged from him for years.
Surprisingly, feelings of attraction between long-lost blood relatives may not be as uncommon as you might think.
According to an article from The Guardian, some experts estimate that about 50 percent of cases where estranged blood relatives are reunited as adults result in romantic attraction.
This attraction may occur because the reunited relatives confuse a natural draw toward one another with romantic feelings. However, not much research has been done on this phenomenon.
Still, consensual relationships between a father and daughter are extremely rare, and any children that result from such relationships face their own set of challenges.
In this case, the 18-year-old woman shared how she began her relationship with her father after 12 years of not seeing him.
Speaking to The Cut, she described how it felt when they were finally reunited.
"It was so weird and confusing," she said. "I was seeing my dad for the first time in forever, but it was also like, 'He's so good-looking!' And then I was like, 'What the hell are you thinking? What is wrong with you?'"
She added, "I saw him as my dad, but then part of me was like, 'I'm meeting this guy I've been talking to over the internet, connecting with, and I find him attractive.'"
She revealed that she realized her attraction to him after they slept in the same room, as she felt nervous about sleeping in new places. On the fourth night, they were 'spooning' when they woke up together.
In the interview, she also brushed off any concerns about the relationship being abusive.
"When you are 18, you know what you want," she stated.
"You're an adult under the law, and you're able to consent. I can take care of myself. I don't need protection. If I were in a situation where I needed to get out, I would. I'm not afraid to defend myself."
The pair are even planning a wedding, though they won’t be able to legally register it due to the incestuous nature of their relationship.
They’ve also discussed the possibility of having children together, which would make her father both the father and grandfather to their kids.
As for whether they would tell their future children the truth, she said, "We've decided that most likely we won't. I don't want to give them any problems."
The 18-year-old expressed little concern over potential genetic issues, comparing it to other inherited risks like cancer or heart disease.
She added, "I wouldn’t risk having a kid if I thought it would be harmful. I’ve done my research."
As for how many people know about their relationship, she said, "Everyone on my mom’s side of the family sees us as father and daughter. Those who know that he’s my dad, and that we are engaged, include my father’s parents (they can see we are happy together and they can’t wait for us to have babies — they treat us just like any other couple), the woman we live with, and my best friend."
She’s chosen to keep the relationship a secret from her mother, fearing that she might report it to the authorities.
The couple is now planning to move to New Jersey, where adult incest isn’t illegal.
"Once I’m there I’ll tell everyone," she said. "I’ll call my mom and let her know that we are in love and we are having children. If she wants to see her grandkids."
