Changing eye colour as we change our clothes has become a new trend among today’s generation then it is due to aesthetic reasons or to correct their vision. Everybody wants to look smart and trendy!
But do you know that mishandling contact lenses can eye infection, blindness, paralysis or in severe cases cause death? Whoa! You must be thinking, what a sh*t I’m talking about. How a small eye infection can lead to all of this?
You don’t believe me? Just scroll down to read the story of Jessica Greaney, an eighteen-year old English Freshman student who was about to lost her eye sight due to a contaminated lens.
#1 Thought, It Was A Minor Eye Infection
One day her eye lid started drooping and her eye become sore. She thought it was some sort of minor eye infection which will get away within few days. But unfortunately, things become worse.
#2 Marathon To Hospital
She went to doctor and they thought that it was some sort of ulcer, and sent her home with some medication for a week. But things were continuously becoming worse. There was something inside her eye, which was causing damage to her eyeball.
#3 Worsen Condition
Her red bulging eye was looking like a huge red golf ball. She was into pain. Nothing was improving. She again went to the hospital and doctors put her under examination.
#4 Shocking Reports
Doctors scraped the layer of her eye and sent for a test, and the reports were shocking. It was a parasite called Acanthamoeba Keratitis, which was actively thriving in her eye. The parasite lives on our red blood cells and eye cells. If we try to kill it by giving medication, it becomes inactive in the form of cyst and reappears as soon as the effect of medication disappears.
#5 Torturous Treatment
To kill the every single germ of the parasite in her week, she was not allowed to sleep for an entire week! Nurses used to gave her eye drops round the clock. This whole treatment was not less than Chinese water torture for Jessica. She was going insane.
#6 After Fourth day
The lack of sleep and rest was making her insane and shutting her immune system down. It was only helping that parasite to survive in her eye. But the brave girl didn't knelt down against that parasite and kept fighting with the situation until doctors declared that she is fine to go home.
#7 Finally, The Day Came!
Due to the hard work of doctors and strong will of Jessica, they were able to kill the parasite and after few days doctors discharged her from the hospital with some medication.
#8 22 Droplets A Day Is Far Better Than Being Blind, Paralyzed Or Dying From A Parasite!
That parasite was not easy to kill. Doctors prescribed an eye drop to her of that she need to put 22 droplets a day in her eyes. So that any how that parasite will not proliferate in her eye again.
#9 But How Did She Get That?
Well guys, almost every teenager and youngster is careless, and she was one of them. She left her contact lens in a glass of solution near sink and splashed her eyes with the tap water. From there, the parasite came in contact with her lenses, and from lenses it entered into her eyeball and started eating her eyeball.
#10 Where Does This Parasite Exist?
It is found in soil, freshwater, and seawater, especially, in the lime scale areas. So dear, it can come into your tap water too. So don't live in a misconception that if you wear lenses then only it will attack you. It can attack you, if you touch your eye with untidy hands containing soil particles.
#11 Be Extremely Careful!
A contaminated lens can potentially damage your eye or show you the way to graveyard. So while cleaning or handling your lenses, be extremely careful.
