Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore were a long shot to make it. She was 16 years older and had three teenage daughters, while he was a 20-something actor in his professional and hunky prime who never seemed to have a girlfriend for very long up to that point. They ended up sticking it out for six years, then filing for divorce…but didn't finalize the split for two years. What happened?
The Real Reason Demi Moore & Ashton Kutcher Got Divorced
#1 The May-December Romance
Kutcher was just 25 when he married the 41-year-old Moore, and neither of them handled the age difference very well. Sources close to the couple say that he never gave himself enough time to grow up before heading down the aisle with a much older woman. The source told People that Kutcher's personality changed and he became a different person after they got together, saying that she was very demanding, treating him like a child.
#2 Changes In Attitude
Another source told Star Magazine that Moore was struggling to hold onto her youth and she believed that by marrying a young actor who was a teen heartthrob, she could recapture some of her glory. They claim that as the marriage progressed she became more obsessed with her age and As Demi got older, she convinced herself that she needed to stay young and skinny to remain attractive to her husband." They reported that Moore was not the woman Kutcher had married, and neither was happy.
#3 Moore Is Obsessed With Staying Youthful
Another source who's known Moore for 30 years explained, "She was always fixated on being young, and the only thing that tied her to that, as she got older, was her marriage to a younger guy and hanging around young people."
Even Moore's daughter, Rumer Willis, then 26, admitted to Access Hollywood Live in 2014, "I realized that he was a year younger than me when he and my mom started going out. That would be like me meeting someone who already had three teenage kids, kind of going into that situation was crazy."
#4 The Cheating
In late 2010, a girl named Brittney Jones claimed that she had an affair with Kutcher and actually was introduced to him by Moore at an event. She claimed she slipped him her number and they then met frequently at his home and had sexual encounters. Both Moore and Kutcher denied the story on Twitter and accused Jones of making the story up for publicity. But that wasn't the last time he would be accused of cheating.
#5 Caught On Camera
Young actress Sara Leal told the Sun she and Kutcher hooked up in a hot tub in September 2011, on the night of his sixth anniversary with Moore. Paparazzi cameras caught the couple in a car together leaving Kutcher's home on three different occasions, including the night she claimed to have sex in the hot tub. Moore could not squash the rumors since there was photographic proof that he had been up to something fishy.
"We had sex twice. Everything felt natural. We were having a good time. One thing led to another. He was good but it wasn't weird or perverted or creepy. I was attracted to him and he was attracted to me," Leal said. Leal also noted that Kutcher had told her he and Moore had separated before the illicit encounter. "I'm a normal 22-year-old girl, and I spent the night with someone who I thought was separated. And ever since, my life has been a mess." Leal just happened to be the girlfriend of Scott Eastwood, who confirmed that she had slept with Kutcher on an episode of Watch What Happens Live.
#6 One Sided Open Marriage
Perhaps Kutcher's wandering eye wasn't necessarily him cheating so much as taking advantage of his wife's Kabbalist beliefs. People reports that one belief in the Jewish mysticism states, "If a man strays for a brief fling, it does not mean that he doesn't love her. He can have an affair yet still love and honor his wife." However, cheating may have been cool with Moore, but appearances count for everything, and she grew tired of defending his actions in the tabloids.
#7 It How The World Perceives You
People reported that closes sources to Moore said, "Appearances are paramount. What people think of her and how she comes across is so important to her, so this is devastating." They said that Moore could have handled the secrets, and she had for a few years, but when Kutcher became sloppy and it became Hollywood scandal, she was furious.
#8 Ashton Wanted Kids Of His Own
Kutcher is now a proud dad of two with second wife Mila Kunis, whom he worked with on That 70s Show and has remained close to for many years. He told Seth Meyers on The Late Late Show that he had always wanted to be a father and he wanted to have many more. "I want like 12 of them," he said in the interview.
#9 Moore Was Past The Motherhood Stage
He wasn't going to get any of his own children with Moore, who had previously been married to Bruce Willis and already had three daughters of her own to raise. A source told People at the time of the split, "He knows that with Demi he won't have kids, and he really wants kids. When he married Demi, he didn't realize it at the time. He didn't get it." They also report that Moore had told a friend she was not interested in any more children and was well past the motherhood stage.
#10 The Public Humiliation Was The Last Straw
A source told Us Weekly that after the Leal scandal, Moore "just couldn't look at Ashton the same way and the marriage completely unraveled. She still loves Ashton but feels he went too far and disrespected her and their marriage in a way that can't be taken back. She wants to set an example for her daughters and this was just something she could not rationalize to them or to herself. She really tried everything she could to forgive him and accept his apologies," the source continued. "At the end of the day, the public humiliation and the example she was setting by staying in the marriage just wasn't the right thing for her."
#11 Money Issues
Considering that both Moore and Kutcher are both worth over $120 million each, you wouldn't think that money would have been an issue. According to TMZ, one of the reasons why it took close to two years to finalize their divorce was Moores's belief that her husband was hiding some of his assets from her. Money that she believed was part hers. Moore believed Kutcher wouldn't have made nearly as much money if she didn't help him network. "Demi introduced him to powerful friends that took Ashton under their wings," a source said. "He would not have been able to make so much money if he had not met them."
However, during the marriage, Kutcher earned significantly more than Moore did in Hollywood as well, with Moore having only 10 roles during their entire relationship. Kutcher, towards the end of the marriage, signed on to Two And A Half Men, becoming the highest-paid actor on TV for three years straight. He also had investments in several tech companies.
#12 Substance Abuse
In early 2012, an alarmingly thin Moore was hospitalized after allegedly abusing "whip-its" and smoking K2 at a party with daughter Rumer in tow. It turned out to not be Moore's first rodeo with substance abuse, which sources claim hurt her marriage to Kutcher. "The drug abuse was a sticking point," a source close to the couple told People. "Ashton wanted her to take care of herself and get a hold of things, and she wouldn't. Right before Demi and Ashton separated, ex-hubby Bruce Willis went over to Demi's house to ask her to get help. He was worried about her and wanted her to get better. Many of her friends did the same thing, but she just wouldn't listen."
#13 Moore Had Finally Had Enough
Aside from the cheating and trust issues, the couple fought all the time about everything. Sources told Star Magazine that Kutcher was growing up and didn't want to be treated as her toy any longer, and she was drugged out because of the rumors and cheating, claiming he drove her to addiction. Moore made it clear to tabloids and social media that she was the one who finally pulled the plug on the six-year marriage.
"It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I have decided to end my six-year marriage to Ashton," she said in a statement to the press. "As a woman, a mother, and a wife, there are certain values and vows that I hold sacred, and it is in this spirit that I have chosen to move forward with my life."
#14 Sometimes Marriages Fail
Kutcher's response didn't indicate his own outright guilt, but didn't deny it either, writing on social media, "I will forever cherish the time I spent with Demi. Marriage is one of the most difficult things in the world and unfortunately, sometimes they fail." He hooked up with Kunis within months of the separation from Moore and they have been together ever since.
