Before there were girl groups like Fifth Harmony and The Pussycat Dolls, people were rocking out to Destiny’s Child and TLC. But the one girl group that was basically the definition of ‘girl power’ was the Spice Girls. And they've come a long way.
#1 Spice Girl Hotness
Despite the plethora of other all-girl pop groups in the 90's, the Spice Girls were probably the hottest. While they looked hot then, they have aged like fine wine. The group released its debut album, Spice, in 1996 and the lead single "Wannabe" was an instant hit.
#2 Super Group
All the spices, Baby, Ginger, Sporty, Scary, and Posh. They had it going on. Forming in 1994, they took the music industry by storm with their debit album "Spice" sold over 30 million records. They followed that up with the album "Spiceworld," that sold 20 million copies. Since then they have sold more than 80 million records, making them the most successful girl group ever.
#3 Ginger Spice
Geri Halliwell, who went by the name Ginger Spice, probably because of her roses red hair. She left the group first to pursue her own thing, dropping a number of records and being nominated for four Brit Awards in the 2000s.
#4 Bikini Designer
While Ginger Spice is not so gingery anymore, she still looks unbelievable at age 42. She has since given birth to baby Bluebell Madonna in 2006. The baby has two godmothers, Posh and Baby spice. Halliwell now designs a line of bikinis.
#5 Posh Spice
Victoria Adams performed in Cannes, France, in 1997. Known for her pout and her love of designer labels, the singer went on to release her own solo material after the group split up. She remains one of the most popular girls, even though she has rarely released any music.
#6 Happily Married
In 1999, Adams married soccer player and sexiest man alive, David Beckham, with whom she now has four children: Brooklyn, Romeo, Cruz, and Harper. She launched a successful fashion line and has appeared as a guest judge on shows such as American Idol and Project Runway. Lots of surgery has made her almost unrecognizable, but her famous 'bitch face' pout is still there.
#7 Scary Spice
Mel B, also known as Scary Spice, was promoting the movie Spice World in February 1997 and is one of the most outspoken members of the girl group. She released her debut solo album, Hot, in 2000.
#8 Not Very Scary Anymore
Melanie Janine Brown also collaborated with a pretty big artist to start off her solo career. She worked with Missy Elliot on ‘I Want You Back'. However, Mel B also did some non-singing projects after the breakup. She was a presenter of a variety of shows and was also a contestant on the fifth season of ‘Dancing With The Stars.' From 2011 - 2012, Brown was a guest judge during the Manchester auditions of ‘The X Factor UK' and later joined the television series in 2014.
#9 Baby Spice
Baby Spice, a.k.a. Emma Bunton got her name by being the youngest in the group. She went on to pursue a solo career starting with the album "A Girl Like Me," followed by a number of records. Emma got together with her original girls to do a greatest hits album.
#10 Hotter Now
Emma has certainly aged wonderfully, as she can rock a little bikini with the best of them. Bunton is Mom to sons Beau and Tate with singer Jade Jones. From 2003 to 2012, she had a recurring role on the BBC comedy Absolutely Fabulous. Bunton competed on Strictly Come Dancing (she finished in third place) and appeared on several other TV shows, including Loose Women, Lorraine, and Dancing on Ice.
#11 Sporty Spice
Just like the others, Melanie Chisholm also decided to go solo post-breakup. She got her start when she collaborated with Canadian singer Bryan Adams on the song ‘When You're Gone'. She eventually left her record company and found her own where she produced some original albums.
#12 Athlete, Judge & Mother
The pop star welcomed a daughter, Phoenix, with dancer Jimmy Gulzar in 1999. She is also mom to daughter Iris (with Eddie Murphy) and Madison (with husband Stephen Belafonte, whom she married in June 2007). The "Holler" singer has also competed on Dancing With the Stars, starred in her own reality show (Mel B: It's a Scary World) and joined the America's Got Talent judging panel. And considering that she was labelled as ‘Sporty Spice' it's no surprise to hear that the singer is also an amateur triathlete and has finished the London Triathlon twice!
#13 Reunion Tour Planned
The girls reunited during the 2012 London Olympics and it appears that they will be planning another reunion sometime next year. Unfortunately, it appears that just three of the five girls will be joining the tour. Baby, Scary, and Ginger Spice are currently on board and are hoping to convince Sporty and Posh Spice to commit. However, with the two doing regular stints on television variety shows as judges, it may be hard to get them to join in. Posh once told reporters that she would never sign on to do another girl group and has actually lost her singing voice.
