We always think about celebrities as if they have always lived charmed lives. They make a ton of money and live in fabulous homes. Plus, they get to travel the world seeing sights that some of us can only dream about seeing.
While celebrities get to frequently enjoy the sweet life it does not mean that they do not also know tragedy and pain. They are human after all. No matter how famous a person gets to be there is no way to escape life's tragedies.
This story is about actress Mariska Hargitay who's life has been full of tragedy and misfortune. However, she is such a strong woman that she refuses to let her past keep her down.

Mariska Hargitay is the daughter of the famous film star, Jayne Mansfield, so you know that drama runs in her blood. Sadly, her mother died in a tragic car accident that would impact the rest of her life.

As if losing her mother was not bad enough, Mariska had to buy back her mother's jewelry after she died to prevent people from taking advantage of her mother's death. It was an unpleasant experience for Mariska.

After her mother's untimely death, Mariska struggled over the loss which became more difficult when people started spreading rumors about the circumstances surrounding her mother's death. The rumors were pretty gruesome.

Mariska was just an infant when she lost her mother, but it took her decades to really deal with the loss and the wound from never really knowing her that was left behind.

Not long after losing her mother, she nearly lost her stepmother who she was very close to and the rest of her siblings. It was a very traumatic event.

And just like her father, she had her own health scares. In 2009, she was hospitalized for a collapsed lung that had gone undiagnosed for a very long time.

After she and her husband Peter had their first child, they decided to adopt another child so their son would have a sibling. They had a mother all lined up, but she changed her mind at the very last minute.

Even though Mariska has faced incredible odds, she stays positive in everything she does and that message is seen through everything that she does in life.

You might think Mariska is just a pretty face, but that is far from true. While going to college and struggling to make it big as an actress, she also taught herself to speak fluent Italian, French, and Hungarian.

Mariska founded and is the president of Joyful Heart Foundation which helps sexual assault and rape victims. She was inspired to create this foundation through her work on the show Law and Order Special Victims Unit.
When she was asked why she thought it was important to help women in need and give back to the survivors she said, “It’s simple physics: the greater the number of people willing to lift, the lighter the load that each individual must carry.”

Even though she has had a lot of hardships in life, she has also had some moments of incredible triumph. Back in 1982, she was crowned Miss Beverly Hills...talk about having brains and beauty, am I right?

Fame did not come easily to Mariska. She shot a starring role in the Power Rangers movie back in 1995 only to learn she was being cut out and replaced by another actress.
No matter what she has gone through, Mariska triumphs as she is now a successful actress living a better life than she has in the beginning. It is true what they say when they say "What does not kill you only makes you stronger."
