#1 It's far more than just a bold fashion statement.

One night in 2009, best friends Barry Delaney (pictured above) and Kevin Elliott casually made a promise to one another. If either of them died, then the other had to wear a dress to the funeral - the brighter the better. It was a promise that neither of them ever thought would actually need to be fulfilled.

#2 Unfortunately, the very next month, everyone's worst fears were realized.

Kevin Elliott, a soldier serving in the British Army, was to be sent to Afghanistan just a few weeks after he and Barry Delaney made their fateful promise to one another. Elliott had confided in Delaney that was terrified of being sent to the then Taliban-controlled province of Helmand. He had seen his friends die on the front lines during his last tour of the country, and feared that he may meet the same fate.

#3 Elliott's worst fears were tragically realized when his infantry was ambushed by Taliban forces. Elliott didn't survive.

#4 His funeral was filled with crying friends and family members, but one man stood out in particular.

Barry Delaney's neon green dress, coupled with his hot pink socks, signify the promise that he made to his very best friend less than a year ago. There were looks. There were stares. Yet most of all, there was a sense of friendship and dedication between two best friends. One, a grown man wearing an awful dress, and another, a young hero taken far too soon.
