Your sister's friend's duckface selfie might not compare to the Mona Lisa on first glance (or at all), but a new experiential museum is challenging that notion.
There's A Museum Of Selfies Coming Soon And Your Instagram Will Never Be The Same
A new museum solely dedicated to the art of the selfie is opening in a suburb of Los Angeles next January.
The attraction will show selfie-inspired art and will also have plenty of Instagram-worthy areas for taking selfies
The Museum of Selfies is the creation of Tommy Honton and Tair Mamedov.
The co-founders of the museum are escaped room designers who are aware of the friction between classical photography and museum attendance and modern drives.
"The relationship between people and art has changed," cofounder Tommy Honton told Mashable.
"Now people don’t want to just be a silent consumer, they want to be a part of the art. There are many more selfies with the Mona Lisa than actual Mona Lisas."
Mamedov says, "Nowadays, museums are not just a place where you just come to check the art."
"They’re a place where you come to create something, using your phone and usually your pretty face to collaborate with existing art and make something new. He hopes that The Museum of Selfies will raise questions about art, artists, and the fine border between consumer and artist."
The museum's origin story is also fitting for a space that aims to collapse artistic elitism and populism.
It's independently funded and has no connections to artistic institutions.
Visitors can expect exhibits inspired by clichés like food pics, bathroom mirror images, and pop culture.
While many museums and world heritage sites have banned selfie sticks, the Museum of Selfies welcomes them. For any Game Of Thrones fans, there will also be an iron throne made up of selfie sticks.
The Museum of Selfies is located at 211 N. Brand Boulevard in Glendale.
Once it opens in January, the museum’s hours will be Wednesday to Friday, noon to 8 p.m., and weekends, noon to 10 p.m. Tickets will be $25. Sign up online to be notified when they go on sale.
