Life can be extremely difficult for teenagers. The pains of figuring out who you are, all while dealing with the many aspects of peer pressure can be a lot to handle. When you also take in to account the added element of an always-on culture, where social media rules, the stakes can seem pretty high.
Sadly, tragedies stemming from the use of social media seem to be spiraling out of control these days. As young teens get more and more access, the risks and dangers increase.
Take for instance the cases of Da'Vorius Christopher "Chi-Chi" Gray, Jennifer Sellers and Nicole Madison. Three impressionable teen who paid the ultimate price, for their curiosity

The first tragic incident, begins in Lyman, SC were 11-year-old pre-teen Da'Vorius Christopher "Chi-Chi" Gray was found dead in March 2016 following his attempt at a social media challenge.

His mother Latrice Hurts says that her son passed after playing "hangman" and the "pass-out challenge" two games where kids try to choke themselves until the loss consciousness.

Hurst says that Da'vorious was exposed to the deadly game on messenger app Kik, after he was sent an anonymous message.

Tragically, another similar incident happened in Pell City, Alabama not long ago. This time around, it was a 14-year-old named Sydney Sellers, who was found deceased hanging from a belt in her bedroom.

Her mother Jennifer says that after her death, they went through Sydney's phone and discovered messages on Kik about "erotic asphyxiation", the deliberate act of cutting off oxygen from the brain for sexual gratification.

13-year-old Nicole Madison shared a similar tragic fate when she fell prey to social media influence. In January 2016, the Blackburg, VA teen went missing.

According to various new sources, Madison was abducted by two Virginia tech students she had met over social media. The two are believed to have started a relation with the teen with the intent to kidnap and kill her.

In all three cases, the parents say the incidents could have been avoided. They are now spreading their stories in hopes that parents will know about the dangers of social media.

They say that you might not be able to stop your kids from accessing apps like KIK, but you can certainly educate them about the dangers that are lurking, and how to avoid them.
