Fans of the show will be shocked to know these surprising facts.
Things You Definitely Didn't Know About 'Orange Is The New Black'
#1 OITNB
Already a pop culture phenomenon, Netflix's hit series "Orange Is The New Black" has broken so many glass ceilings that it's one of the very few watercooler series left on television. People can't seem to get enough of the prison drama/comedy. It's a good thing Netflix lets viewers watch an entire season at their leisure because real fans just can't get enough. But did you know some of these little tidbits about the stars and the show?
#2 Laura Prepon
She originally auditioned to play the part of Piper, the main character. According to the showrunner, Laura was just too tough for Piper so they kept her on and created the role of Alex for her. She's fantastic in the part!
#3 Natural Chemistry
The shower makeout scene was the very first scene Taylor Schilling and Laura Prepon shot together. Afterward, Laura said the two had a natural chemistry, and Taylor told her "Thank God it's with you!" The two have been best friends ever since! Laura said the kissing made them feel comfortable around one another from there on out.
#4 The Title Sequence Features Real Inmates
The engaging, yet very long title sequence actually features pictures of real former inmates, including Piper Kerman! Piper wrote the book that the TV show is based on. Most of the faces you see are former friends of hers from prison. Faces she says she "will never forget".
#5 The Wear Actual State Issued Uniforms
The entire cast wears actual prison garb while filming. Taryn Manning (Pennsatucky) told a magazine that the cast has to wear "court-ordered granny panties" and bras that give them "uni-boob." Anything to help the cast get into character!
#6 That 70s Show Foreshadowing
Laura's character from That '70s Show predicted Alex's fate on Orange is the New Black. Donna says, "I could get arrested. I could go to a girl prison." Hmmm.. what a coincidence.
#7 The Crazy Thing About Crazy Eyes
Now everyone's favorite character, originally Suzanne was only supposed to be featured in three or four episodes. When viewers fell in love with her character, writers and producers helped keep her in the main cast. After the episodes were filmed, the writers and producers fought for her to stay on the show and finally convinced the network to add her.
#8 Filmed In Orangeburg
With orange in the title, it makes sense in a weird way that one of the filming locations is on Orangeburg Road in Orangeburg, Orangetown.
It's a real place in New York, apparently! Google it!
#9 Did You Notice The Woman
Every time Piper uses the prison phone, there is another prisoner using the phone behind her. That person never changes either, it's always the same crying woman. Piper said that there always seemed to be someone behind her crying when she used the actual prison phone so she incorporated that into the story.
#10 The Real Red
One of the most illustrious characters, Red is based on a real woman Piper knew in the brink. Red shares the same nickname as Morgan's Freeman's character in The Shawshank Redemption. Both characters smuggled drugs into the prison! The 'Red' in real life did the same thing and got caught, according to writer Piper.
#11 Identical Twins
The actress Laverne Cox's identical twin, M Lamar, acts in the flashbacks before her transition throughout the series. He portrays her in the scenes that show her before she decided to transition to female. Now that's good casting.
#12 Yoga Is Patty Mayonnaise
If Yoga Jones' voice sounds familiar, it's because the actress voiced Patti Mayonnaise on the animated children's hit, Doug! Remember Patti? She was the secret love interest of Doug!
#13 Lots Of References To Other Shows And Books
The show premiered on the same day that the book The Fault In Our Stars was released. The writers and producers are huge fans of the book and even included it in the show! The title of each episode is always mentioned in the episode. Who can forget the crazy season 3 finale?! This is by far the best reference to an episode title.
#14 Bye Bye Miss American Pie
There's a reference to the comedy film American Pie in the pilot! Jason Bigg's character mentions two past events involving a webcam and a shaving incident. Those incidents happened to his character in the classic comedy American Pie movies!
