It is only natural to complain about things that we are unable to change. We usually complain about trivial things that are really not worth stressing ourselves over. But, when we come across someone else who has a devastating condition, that is when we realize that things are really not that bad for us. We realize that we have it kind of good in comparison. Falling ill and having to deal with chronic pain is one of the worst things that can happen to anyone.

We all know that pain can come in many different forms, but have you ever heard of a condition that makes you feel like you are on fire? Imagine the only effective remedy for your pain is your freezer.

Sadly, 23-year-old Paige Howitt suffers from such a condition. She has a rare and incurable condition that she claims is so painful that it is worse than childbirth. It is so bad that she has to sleep next to a freezer. She was diagnosed with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome and is in constant agony. She said the pain is so fierce that it feels like she is being burned alive.

"The pain is always there, every minute of the day. It has effectively ruined my social life. If people want to go out and get drinks or go to the cinema, it’s almost impossible for me because the knee always has to be in certain positions to stop it being more painful."

Ever since she developed this condition, her life has been full of inconvenience and extreme discomfort. It is an exhausting illness, and there is little that she can really do about it. She says that she can't sit on her couch without being propped up and it takes her hours to get comfortable enough to sleep at night. She uses a pregnancy pillow to keep her knee straight and packs ice packs around it to numb it.

Sadly, there is not much that can be done to help soothe the pain. As soon as her knee comes in contact with anything, it immediately starts to burn. It is so sensitive that she cannot put it under the covers because the touch of the fabric sets off the burning sensation.

Paige keeps a freezer at her bedside and one at work so she has her ice packs handy at all times. "At any one time, my knee is either blue from the cold or red from the burning sensation and nothing in between." But, using the ice packs to soothe the pain can also make it more intense. There is no winning in her situation.

What this young woman is going through is heartbreaking. It is also a reminder that everyone is capable of developing a devastating illness with chronic pain. We just hope that an effective treatment will come soon for this young lady and anyone else who suffers from this condition.
