German woman with 10 personalities is legally blind. But she can see perfectly when she becomes a teen aged boy!
This Blind Woman Can Only See When She Thinks She’s A Boy!
#1 After Being Blind For 15 Years She Woke Up And Could See
After being blind for over 15 years, a 37-year-old German woman suddenly woke up and could see. Sounds like something that she should be happy about, right? Well, in this case, it's not quite that simple. When she looked into the mirror, she remembered the face that was staring back at her. She even remembers the body before her. The only problem is, it's not her, because in her mind she's an adolescent boy.
#2 An Accident Left BT Blind At The Age Of 20
The German patient, referred to only as B.T. (for the Bronchial Thermoplasty), was diagnosed with cortical blindness after an accident damaged the part of her brain responsible for sight when she was 20. She was completely blind at the time and accompanied by a guide dog. And she still needs the dog because she can only see at certain times.
#3 She Was Later Diagnosed With Multiple Personality Disorder
The woman was diagnosed with a condition known as Dissociative identity disorder (DID), where multiple personalities battle to control her personality. Doctors say she has several other personalities living within her mind, which can now also see the world that was once locked away.
#4 Suffering From Cortical Blindness She Baffled Doctors When She Began To See While In A Different Personality State
B.T suffered a traumatic accident, and at that time the doctors diagnosed her to have cortical blindness. B.T. moved on with life without her sight, but also suffered from Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), which is the reclassification for what most people call Multiple Personality Disorder. She lived life as a blind woman until recently when her other personalities began coming through in her mind.
#5 As A Teenage Boy She Can Now See 20/20
While B.T. was undergoing therapy for her DID, and in one of her personalities a teenage boy her sight began to come back. At first, she could only see a single word on a page, nothing more. But as time went on, and with help from her doctors she began to see the world that she had missed out on.
#9 Suffering With 10 Different Personalities Living Inside Her Mind, The Only One Still Blind Is Her Own Personality
In total, she has 10 personalities of different names, voices, and genders. Some of her personalities spoke only in German, others used English. This is thought to be linked to when the patient lived in an English-speaking country as a child.
However, over time, she has now regained partial sight with 8 of the other personalities, but can only see 20/20 with the teen boy alter ego. Her own persona is still totally blind.
#5 Doctor's Decided It Was Much More Than The Brain Injury That Caused Her Blindness
Just to ensure she was in fact blind in some of her personalities, a lie detector test and EEG readings of her brain waves were taken. It showed there were no patterns of lying, and that B.T. was 100 percent blind in some personalities, and was able to see in others.
Her doctors found it wasn't brain damage from the traumatic accident that caused the blindness, but something much deeper within B.T.'s mind.
#7 Major Psychological Trauma Caused BT To Retreat Inside Of Her Own Mind
the doctors theorize that B.T. had suffered major psychological trauma from the accident, which had caused B.T. to retreat into herself, making her blind. This may have literally been from not wanting to see what was unfolding before her. B.T.'s case has been the cause of many studies on Dissociative Identity Disorder, and the extremes the mind will go to, to protect us. The brain is amazing, but this case shows that if left unguarded, the mind will take control, and respond how it thinks it should.
