After finding out she has leukemia, one young lady from China is in for the fight of her life. Sadly it's a losing battle unless she is able to get a bone marrow transplant.

18-year-old Xinxin was given a few short months to live after finding out that she suffered from leukemia. To hinder the spread of the disease she has been receiving chemotherapy but without a bone marrow transplant, she will not live much longer. On top of leukemia, she has also been diagnosed with sarcoma.

Leukemia is a form of cancer that affects the blood and Sarcoma is a type of cancer that causes tumors to grow on connective tissue. If Xinxin could just receive a bone marrow transplant she would have a much better chance of surviving. Her father originally agreed to donate his marrow but he refused to show up when the time came. Because she has hepatitis B, her mother cannot donate her marrow and her brother is an unsuitable donor as well.

Immediate family members are normally the ones who give bone marrow transplants because their cells match. This stops the body from rejecting the marrow.

Xinxin's dad is a 90% match for her making him nearly perfect until he bailed on appearing for the operation that would save his daughter's life. While he is not a suitable donor, Xinxin's stepdad has done everything in his power to try and locate her father and try to convince him to follow through.

Xinxin's stepdad went all the way to North China in order to track down her birth father.

He said: "I’ve watched Xinxin grow since she was five years old. She is a pretty girl, very optimistic, but now she is receiving bone marrow puncture and doing blood test every day."

All Xinxin can do now is wait and see if her dad will step up to the plate. That is her only option for survival.

It's unclear why her dad refused to donate. The operation is simple. The donor is numbed and then a large needle is inserted around the hip and used to extract marrow from the bone. The marrow usually regenerates fully within 2 to 7 days.

If Xinxin doesn't get the transplant, doctors believe she will only live about another 3 months at a maximum so time is of the essence. Xinxin used to undergo military training until she collapsed one day during an exercise. Since then, her cancer has rapidly spread and within 6 months of her diagnosis, she might die.

Sometimes doctors are able to find people who are eligible donors that are not family members at all. This is done using donation lists where registered people are tested for potential matches with people in need of marrow transplants.

Hopefully, Xinxin's dad will come back and do the right thing. If not, hopefully, they can find a suitable donor.
