Introduction

To rid yourself of these annoying ever-present companions (or to not attract them in the first place), there are a few easy, useful tricks. And the best part? Not a single chemical in sight!

1. Coffee powder

Put some coffee powder into a bowl and use a lighter to make it smolder a bit. The smoke will keep wasps away.

2. Pennies

Wasps hate the smell of copper and brass. Rub some pennies on your hands and put a few in a bowl on your table.

3. No colorful clothing

Like all insects, wasps are attracted by garish colors. If you dress yourself and your children in more plain and muted tones you'll lower the wasps' belligerence considerably.

4. Basil

The smell of some plants is pure kryptonite for wasps. Basil is a member of this club. If you put a pot with some on your garden table, wasps will take a big detour around it. Tomato plants also have the same effect (but are less decorative).

5. Garlic

The ethereal oil of garlic keeps wasps far away too. Halve a couple of cloves and keep them nearby and you'll be astonished. You can get the same effect with a lemon garnished with some cloves.

6. Always cover your food.

This trick is just as simple as effective: to avoid offering wasps an enticing bullseye, always cover up any food well. That is true even for sweets on the garden table as well as hearty meat dishes or hot dogs from the grill. That way you won't whet their appetite!

7. The paper bag trick.

This trick is really brilliant! With two to three paper bags, you can outwit wasps easily. The bags work as a dummy wasp nest and will distract the pests away from you. Wasps don't like encroaching on unknown nests and will thus keep away on their own. Check out this video and try it yourself. Hang up some fake wasp nests and you'll be astonished!
