It’s the clip that’s been driving the internet wild… and no, I’m not talking about the Pen Pineapple Apple Pen guy. I’m talking about a video in which a man punches a kangaroo in the face in order to save his pet dog. What a headline.

A man punching a kangaroo to save his dog, but it turns out there's a heartbreaking story behind the hilarity.

The video was filmed by a group of hunters in June, at a rural estate in Condobolin in New South Wales, Australia, and had been organized by strangers to help, Kailem Barwick, a 19-year-old man who was dying of cancer.

And the man who delivered the infamous punch to the violent kangaroo has been identified as Greig Tonkins, a zookeeper who accompanied Kailem on his last hunt.

Greig Tonkins' trip was planned so that Kailem Barwick, a man who was dying of cancer, could enjoy his final taste of freedom before his illness consigned him to a bed for the rest of his days. Barwick, had a longstanding dream of catching a wild boar that weighs more than 100kg, also known as a "tonner".

The clip was originally filmed as part of a longer video, put together for Kailem to enjoy. Matthew Amor, who was part of the hunting trip, stated: "[the DVD] was made and put together for a sick young man who has recently passed away it was a memory and part of the trip and gave us a great laugh after."

Just days before he passed away, Kailem married the love of his life, Brandi-Lee Wadwell, in a small ceremony held beside his hospital bed. Then Kailem finally lost his two year battle to Ewing Sarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer.
