This Is What Would Happen To You If You Fell Into Molten Lava

#1 Volcanoes are fascinating, mainly because of the lava they contain.

#2 Some people have wondered what exactly it would be like to fall into a volcano.

#3 Many people probably assume it would be like falling into extremely hot water.

Obviously, you wouldn't survive.

#4 Actually, it wouldn't be like that at all.

#5 Recently a new video gave an idea of what might happen, and it wouldn't be pretty.

#6 Basically, lava is a lot denser than water, so you wouldn't just splash right in.

#7 You would actually hit the lava, cause a dent, and then burst into flames.

#8 It would be a pretty horrific way to die.

#9 It should perhaps be added: don't try this at home!

Unless you have a death wish, it's best to stay as far away from lava as possible.

#10 Here's the video.

It's interesting to imagine that happening to our bodies. No thank you!

#11 Now that you have seen the first video, check out this one and here are a few more facts to go with it.

Lava is very dense two to three times as much as water and the human body. Because of that density difference, a body thrown into a volcano, whether it belongs to Gollum or a sacrificial virgin, is going to float. What's more, lava can be thousands to millions of times more viscous than water, and won't deform as much or as fast when you hit it and allow you to sink.

So, generally, the nature of lava makes it unlikely that you'll sink. With the right body, the right lava and the right fall, though, there's no guarantee. In the video below, volcano researcher Richard Roscoe tosses a ~65-pound box of trash ~260 feet into a lava lake, where it penetrates the lava's crust and appears to sink.
