#1 Have You Seen Anyone With A Hole Near Their Ear?

Maybe you are lucky enough to have one yourself? Start checking your ear or your family members ears.

#2 The Location May Vary

These small indentations, or holes, appear around the ear somewhere, usually near the top of the ear, but they can be just about anywhere near the ear.

#3 Not Everybody Has Them

In the United States, it's believed that only 1% of the population has this hole around the ear. In Asia, they're more common, where 4-8 percent of people have them. In Africa, 10% of the population has this hole.

#4 But Just What Are They?

Before you ask someone with that little hole if it's a piercing of some sort, the answer is no. They are actually a congenital malformation called preauricular sinuses characterized by a nodule, dent or dimple located anywhere adjacent to the external ear. They are not harmful and don't cause any pain, discomfort, or irritation.

#5 But What Is The Purpose Of Them?

Nobody knows! Some scientists believe they are leftover from evolution and could be where gills were located. But most people only have them on one side of their head, near one ear.

#6 They Do Not Normally Harm You In Any Way

However, there have been a few cases where people have had infections in their 'holes'. But this is uncommon, just as the holes themselves are.

#7 Keep Your Eyes Out For People With These Sinus Holes

If you find someone with the preauricular sinuses let them know what it is. However, remind them that it's not safe to put jewelry in there. That could be harmful.
