#1 Formulated to make you fat

Firstly, soda has virtually no nutritional value whatsoever. Zip, zero zilch. If you’re trying to cut down on calories, eliminating soda is a no-brainer. There are just no benefits other than the taste – and there are lots of healthy, great tasting alternatives … as I explain below.

Beyond the empty calories, research shows that the high fructose corn syrup found in soft drinks actually triggers a hunger hormone that causes you to consume more food than your body needs. Other research reveals disruptions to microflora in the intestines that could decrease nutrient absorption – meaning you need to eat more food to get the same nutrients. Lastly, if you think you’re doing yourself a favor by drinking diet soda, think again. You may have heard about the recent Purdue University study that linked diet sodas to the very same health problems caused by their sugary counterparts, including obesity, diabetes and heart disease. In fact, multiple studies show that that drinking diet soda actually makes you fatter!

But you don’t need science to prove that. Look around at the people drinking diet soda and ask yourself whether the “diet” is working.

#2 Really tasty toxins:

The world is awash in toxins, so if you can avoid drinking them you should. Oh where to start… Firstly, whether your soda comes in a plastic bottle or aluminum can, chances are the container is made or coated with BPA or a BPA derivative that is known to cause a variety of health problems. Secondly, most sodas are produced with low quality, unfiltered municipal tap water, which may contain undesirable levels of industrial runoff, pharmaceutical drug residues and other chemicals. Also, the HFCS used in most soda is highly processed and known to contain industrial chemical residues, including mercury. In fact, one study found mercury in over 50% of samples tested! Oh yeah, then there’s the fire retardant. Yep, many sodas contain an innocuous ingredient called “brominated vegetable oil,” which is widely used as a fire retardant in many industrial applications. At least you know your soda won’t catch fire.

#3 The Scary Side-Effects of Aspartame

Instead of sugar, manufacturers load up diet drinks with aspartame and other artificial sweeteners to give that sugary taste without the calories. The problem is that these sweeteners can be more deadly than actual sugar.

Did you know that aspartame is one of the most controversial FDA approvals in history? So far, over 10,000 complaints relating to this sugar replacer have been filed. What’s really worrying is the FDA’s own admission that less than 1% of those who experience a reaction to a product ever report it. The real number of aspartame related problems could be closer to one million.

Over 90 side effects have been linked to this dangerous additive, ranging from headaches, chronic fatigue and depression to cancer and seizures.

While certain soda companies have said they will drop this genetically modified sweetener from their products, it’s merely going to be replaced by another, newer sweetener called sucralose. It’s not yet known what negative side effects this will bring.

#4 Cancer Concerns

Even though it may say ‘caramel coloring’ on the can, don’t be misled. Your favorite colas are not, in fact, filled with sweet and sticky caramel. The dark color of these drinks is manufactured by heating ammonia and sulfites to form compounds which are known carcinogens.

Tests have shown that high doses of the chemicals in this coloring cause tumors on the liver, lungs and thyroid of rats and mice. Naturally, chemicals that cause cancer in animals are considered to be a threat to humans too.

In 2012, the Center for Science in the Public Interest estimated that 15,000 cancers could be caused by the levels of 4-MeI currently found in drinks. Shortly after, Coca-Cola announced it would be changing its formula to include lower levels of these carcinogens, although the additive wouldn’t be removed completely. Unnecessary toxins in any amount should be a cause for concern.

#5 They can raise our risk of heart disease

Scientists in America found a strong link between the proportion of daily calories from foods laden with added sugars (like fizzy drinks) and death rates from cardiovascular disease. They claimed that drinking three cans a day could triple our risk of heart disease.

#6 They can cause liver damage

A study from 2009 found that sugary drinks can cause fatty liver disease and drinking just two cans per day could lead to liver damage.

#7 They can cause early puberty

A Harvard Medical School study of 5,583 girls aged nine to 14 found that those who drank just one-and-a-half cans of soft drink a day had their first periods earlier than those who did not. This consequently meant that their risk of cancer increased.

#8 Vitamin deficiency

The phosphoric acid contained in Coke along with caffeine, which has a diuretic effect, starts washing nutrients and vitamins out of your body 60 minutes after you had the drink. Imagine that happening every day. That’s how a vitamin deficiency starts.

#9 Skin problems

Drinking Coke every day has the same impact on your skin as smoking. Consuming soda has an inflammatory effect on the body due to high levels of sugar. It dehydrates the skin, emphasizing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It accelerates skin aging, making it saggy and dull. It also exaggerates eczema, or very dry, itchy, inflamed skin, and acne.

#10 Age Faster

The phosphoric acid found in soda has been linked to heart and kidney problems, muscle loss and osteoporosis if taken in too great a quantity.

Found in both regular and diet soda, this chemical is added to drinks to preserve their shelf life but it might just shorten yours!

A study has shown that the excessive phosphate levels found in sodas caused lab rats to die five weeks earlier than rats with more normal phosphate levels.

#11 They can cause premature birth in pregnant women

Pregnant women were warned against drinking diet fizzy drinks after a study taken in Denmark on 60,000 women. Those who drank artificially sweetened soft drinks, whether fizzy or still, were found to be more likely to give birth prematurely. It was thought that the chemicals in the artificial sweetner changed the wombs of the women.

#12 Depression

A massive US research study carried out in 2013 of over 250,000 people found depression was more common among frequent consumers of artificially sweetened beverages.

Although researchers didn’t say what caused this link, it may well go back to the controversial additive aspartame.

A study last year found that just half of the FDA’s maximum acceptable daily intake of aspartame could cause serious neuro-behavioral issues in otherwise healthy adults. Participants were found to suffer from irritable moods, depression and poor cognitive performance.

What’s more, a 1992 study on aspartame’s effects on those with a history of depression had to be stopped early because of the severity of some patients’ reactions!

#13 Dental erosion

The high acidity and sugary ingredients of Coca-Cola cause tooth enamel and cavities. If you add in low levels of calcium due to vitamin deficiency, you can end up with your teeth rotting inside and outside. And it won’t take long.

#14 Lack of Nutrients

There is absolutely no nutritional value in soda whatsoever. Not only are there many harmful effects of soda, but there are not even any positive benefits to outweigh them. Soda is an unnatural substance that harms the body.
