This New Beach Trend In China Is Scarier Than The Sharks And Jellyfish

Summer is here! Time to start packing for the beach. Did you bring your sunscreen? The umbrella? Now, did you buy a colorful balaclava a la Pussy Riot? No?
The brightly colored "facekini" is the new beach trend among women in China. It's basically one of those elastic covers you put on your textbooks, but with holes cut into it for your mouth, nose, and eyes. Nothing more relaxing that profusely sweating from your face, right?
#1 These are not lucha libra wrestlers. These are women in China sporting facekinis on the beach.
#2 The reason this fad has become so popular is because in China, extremely pale faces are considered a sign of beauty. Chinese women desperately try to shield their faces from the sun during the summer months in order to retain a milky complexion.
#3 Vendors of the facekinis tell women odd things to get them to buy certain colors. Apparently, one vendor tells customers that orange facekinis repel sharks, because sharks (which are mostly blind) fear its brightness.
The color also presumably repels anyone you're trying to impress with your beach bod.
You may look at the facekini and think it's ridiculous. That's fair. But I'd argue that it's no less foolish than purposely sitting out in the sun to tan yourself. I'd personally rather look like a ninja Skittle than have skin cancer.
