People have secrets, and some have valuables they keep hidden. But nothing compares to the things we located hidden or stored in these heavily guarded locations. Many are hidden in plain sight while others are deep below the surface of the Earth. Some are privately owned and some are government run. Either way, it's for certain that they don't want just anyone finding out what is hidden in these locations. Many of these have been around for many decades, if not an entire century or more. The following is an overview of 13 very interesting stories about the world’s most heavily guarded places.
True Stories Behind The World’s Most Heavily Guarded Places
#1 Vanishing Iranian Gold Reserves (Undisclosed Location)
It's the world's most impenetrable bank vault, and with good reason. It never stays in one place. You'll have to find it before you can be denied entry to the heavily guarded location, and that seems almost impossible. Though touted as a huge gold reserve, some believe the place is emptier than Capone's Vault. The answer to the “where” of the Iranian Gold Vault remains a mystery, nevertheless, I would try and book Geraldo to host the live streaming of the opening. Just in case there is real gold inside.
#2 Hidden Treasures At Cheyenne Mountain (Colorado)
Cheyenne Mountain, once the command center for the North American Aerospace Defense Command and U.S. Space command missions, is one of the most secure facilities in the world. It was constructed to further the US in exploring outer space and was built in an unusual manner. The facility has it's own conspiracy theories, as with anyplace that keeps guards on duty and never lets the public inside. Due to the fact that although NORAD operations have long since been relocated, the center remains open and fully staffed. This has people wondering just what is being done underneath that mountain.
#3 The Origins Of Bold Lane Car Park (England)
Located in England, it is presumably the most secure car lot in the world and has been deemed the Fort Knox of car garages. But there is one small problem. Nobody knows how it came into existence in the mid-1970s. To top that off, the crime in the area was out of this world. In 1997 there were 161 robberies inside the garage alone, and beggars were seen roaming the site on a regular basis. The Derby City Council put a security system in place and they have been crime-free for almost a decade now. But who parks there and what is inside? Nobody has seen a car enter or leave in 11 years.
#4 The ADX Suicide (Colorado)
ADX Florence Prison (nicknamed the Alcatraz of the Rockies), is the most notorious prisons in the world. The nation's most dangerous criminals have called this place 'home' for a time. The prison hit the headlines in 2013 when a prisoner named Robert Knott ended his life after spending about a decade at the prison. The details of his suicide shined a light on the conditions at the facility. His mental health issues were ignored and he hung from a wall in shackles for 11 days before being discovered and pronounced dead. Several other suicides in similar fashion were later discovered there, all with victims shackled to a wall, with no way of committing suicide. Not as fun as Orange Is The New Black, is it?
#5 Vatican Secret Vault Conspiracy (Vatican City)
This very controversial vault, owned by the Catholic Church, is the subject of sorts of conspiracy theories. No one is allowed inside except for very high-ranking church officials. Recent leaks of secret documents from the vaults were said to be found that imply money laundering, blackmail, secret homosexual lifestyles, and much more. The church claims this is highly exaggerated, but they do own a high powered telescope, hidden in the vaults, that is named LUCIFER. Makes you wonder what they actually do know. Either way, finding a way to find out for yourself by getting access will probably be more difficult than figuring out The Da Vinci Code.
#6 Controversial Mormon Secret Church Vaults (Utah)
The Mormon Church’s Secret Vault has been the subject of an array of eyebrow-raises and conspiracies for quite some time but that could be because the Mormon Church has been shrouded in secrecy since its inception. Having huge, heavily guarded vaults does nothing to help their case. The vaults are said to hold the world’s largest collection of genealogical records, but why is it sealed tighter than a drum? The last time someone besides the Mormon clergy has entered the vaults was in 1911 when a 21-year-old Prussian convert snuck in and took pictures of the many underground tunnels. Nothing out of the ordinary was found, but perhaps he just didn't know what to look for.
#7 The Non-Federal Origins Of The Federal Reserve Bank (New York City)
The Federal Reserve Bank, in the heart of New York City, is home to the world's largest collection of gold, buried deep in the ground beneath Manhattan. But the real secret is that nobody is sure who owns it. For one thing, the institution is not at all a federal business, it’s a private institution that is essentially lending this nation its money, with interest. And though they pave the way the economy flows, they are the printers of all cash for the United States. Technically they could place the USA in bankruptcy at any time.
#8 Fools’ Gold At Fort Knox (Kentucky)
Fort Knox is widely recognized for being one of the most secure facilities on the planet. Perhaps, more interesting, Fort Knox not only houses gold, but it is also said to hold important historical documents such as the Magna Carta and the Declaration of Independence. The walls are said to be virtually impenetrable. Many speculate that this heavily guarded 'fort' is all a ruse. They believe there are no gold bars in the storage vaults at all and an audit showed there were nowhere near the 7,000 bars that were supposed to be inside. Senator Ron Paul asked for a new audit several years ago but that has not happened yet. But you still can't get close to the solid granite walls.
#9 The Truth Behind The Doomsday Seed Vault Conspiracy (Svalbard)
It's as terrifying as it sounds and is located in one of the most remote places on the planet. The official name of this vault is actually the Svalbard International Seed Vault and it is located in an old mine complete with motion sensors, airlocks, armed guards, blast-proof doors, as well as steel reinforced concrete that is a meter thick. Many believe the facility is a governmental conspiracy meant to house the elite in case of a world war or disaster, leaving common people to fend for themselves. People believe there is much more going on beneath the surface and it houses 250 million crop seeds. The doors are only opened once to each donor to take a peek inside.
#10 World Jewish Congress Vs. Swiss Vaults (Switzerland)
You've heard of these Swiss banks where everything is guarded and you need three keys to open a security box, but this one subject to controversy for an entirely different reason. In 1995, the World Jewish Congress began negotiating with Swiss banks for allegedly keeping dormant Jewish accounts from WWI. Although litigation went on for quite some time, they did end up receiving a whopping $490 million and it is kept in, you guessed it, a Swiss Bank. This has led others to ponder on what other treasures may be hiding in these vaults. The Jewish Congress denies the accounts but the Swiss government has provided proof to reporters of over $1 billion is assets at three different locations.
#11 Bank of England’s Suspicious Gold Supply (England)
One of the most massive collections of gold bullion bars in the world, if you know anyone who is missing a rumored collection of hidden treasures, it might be a good idea to check here. With more than 4,600 tons of gold being safeguarded in what is also known as the UK’s largest gold vault, the supply of gold being held in the UK is second only to the one being stashed at the Federal Reserve Bank in NYC. However, the biggest controversy about this is that the average person cannot get close enough to confirm or deny its contents. Many have speculated that the gold could be fake and the real treasure may be elsewhere. Others still seem to believe there is either much more or much less gold in the vaults than is being reported.
#12 Crossing The Line At The Korean Demilitarized Zone (Korea)
While other locations are highly secure, this location is one of the most dangerous in the world. The Korean Demilitarized Zone is 160 miles in length and is 2.5 miles wide and one of the most highly guarded borders in the world. Given the rich, complicated history of the area, venturing into this zone represents much more than a simple security breach. Surprisingly, once a year, the women of Cambodia, Guatemala, Liberia, and North Ireland all come together at the zone to promote peace. It hasn't happened yet, but there is always hope.
#13 The Greenbrier Bunker Museum (West Virginia)
The Greenbrier bunker has been the subject of an array of conspiracies despite the fact that this West Virginia mansion is a resort for the wealthy. The secrets, however, lay beneath the grounds in secret bunkers. In 1992 it was reported by a former member that the bunkers were simply fallout shelters and were outdated. They had not been kept up to date since the middle 1950s. Although the place remains heavily guarded, these days it is nothing more than a glorified museum, complete with tours and all.
