UN Releases Video Of North Korean Soldier Escaping To Freedom Across Border As Bullets Fly

The video also shows North Korean soldiers chasing the defector while crossing the border, the UN Command in Seoul said. He was hit at least four times and critically wounded. One of the worst wounds was in the man’s abdomen, where the bullet shattered his pelvis.

Hochong Song, a public affairs officer for US Forces Korea said," UN Command has disclosed security footage of a defection across the heavily fortified demilitarized zone (DMZ) that divides North and South Korea."

The UN Command said, North Korean soldiers violated the Korean War armistice By firing across the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), which oversees the 64-year-old ceasefire agreement.

More than 40 bullets were fired at the defector from pistols and from an AK-47 one soldier hurries across the dividing line, he looks down and seems to realize what he has done before running back to the northern side.

The North Korean soldiers then crawl up to the defector, who lies wounded about 55 yards south of the border. The defector was later flown by Us military helicopter to Ajou University Medical Centre near Seoul.

The 24-year-old defector is being identified only with the surname Oh. He has regained consciousness but needs further treatment, his surgeon Lee Guk-jong said.

North Korea has not publicly commented on the defector, who was a soldier from the North Korean People’s Army. A UN Command statement said officials notified the North’s military of these violations and requested a meeting to discuss the investigation results and measures to prevent future such violations.
