The pair, undergraduates from Hanoi, both ended requiring medical treatment, according to hospital director Nguyen The Luong. Vietnamese Toui Tre newspaper reported that the couple sustained scratches to their privates, ‘to the point of bleeding'.

The news outlet reports that a disregard for safe sex is a problem in the south east Asian country. A study by the Medical University of Hanoi and Hanoi Medical College surveyed 2,700 students from six universities and found that 16% of students admitted to having sex.

However, just a third of those youngsters said they had used a condom when romping for the first time. And around 25% of those questioned said they found buying rubber sheaths embarrassing.
