What Doctors Found In This Man's Stomach Doesn't Seem Medically Possible

Eating disorders are no laughing matter. They can easily become serious health issues if they're not properly and quickly addressed. Over the last several decades, awareness for more common eating disorders, like anorexia and bulimia, has increased quite a bit.

However, those are not the only eating disorders out there. A rare eating disorder that's been in the news lately, known as pica, is both horrifying and incredibly sad.

#1 Pica is a mental illness that's characterized by the desire to eat non-nutritive substances like paper, metal, or dirt.

#2 Those with pica who do not seek treatment run the risk of severe injury or death. Below is the stomach X-ray of a South African man who suffers from pica.

Last week, this particular 25-year-old man was admitted to a local hospital after vomiting blood.

#3 Doctors took the man into emergency surgery and removed nearly five pounds of metal debris from his stomach.

#4 The removed items included a screwdriver, forks, keys, chains, and pieces of wire.

Luckily, doctors were quick enough to be able to save the man's life.

Witnessing this is just horrifying. Eating disorders of any kind are no laughing matter, and pica is extremely gruesome. We hope this man will get the treatment he needs to overcome his illness. Otherwise, he might not be so lucky next time.
