When working on a construction site, everyone is aware of the dangers and the dire necessity of wearing PPE (personal protective equipment). For 24 year old Brazilian construction worker, Eduardo Leite, this is a given, and as usual went to work wearing his safety gear. He didn't know however, what was about to happen.

Without warning a 1.8m long iron bar fell from the 5th floor of the building that was under construction. The metal bar pierced straight through the back of Eduardo's hard hat, entered his head and exited again through the front of his face, between his eyes.

Incredibly Eduardo remained conscious, and as he was transported to the Miguel Couto hospital in Rio de Janeiro, he was able to talk with paramedics and explain what had happened.

Lilian Regina da Silva Costa, Eduardo's wife, said they'd told her that he was laying in the ambulance with the bar pointing upward, "he was holding it and his face covered in blood. His look was as if nothing had happened." Eduardo told doctors that he had no pain, that he couldn't feel anything amiss.

Eduardo was taken into the operating room, where surgeons opened his skull, inspected his brain and ascertained that it was safe to remove the iron rod, and that the best way to do so was to remove the bar from the front, in the same direction it had entered. The surgery was a five hour procedure! Luiz Alexandre Essinger, chief of staff of Miguel Couto hospital, said that Eduardo showed no negative side effects and claimed to be in very little pain the following day.

Ruy Monteiro, the hospital's head of neurosurgery said that Eduardo was extremely lucky because if the rod had been just a few centimetres to the side, he would have lost an eye and been paralysed down his left side. Thankfully the metal rod entered into what's known as a "non-eloquent" area of the brain, which doesn't have a specific or major known function.
