What would finally push someone to walk away from their marriage?

For one woman, the answer came when she discovered exactly how her husband spoke about her behind her back — thanks to a simple text he had sent to his friends.

The unnamed woman shared her story on Mamamia under the headline: 'The text my ex-husband sent about Friday night drinks that ended my marriage'.

So what exactly went down?

She explained that their son had been born two years earlier, and right from that moment, "Nothing changed for my husband".

She had moved into the nursery to take care of night feeds, but meanwhile, her husband carried on as though nothing had changed.

He still enjoyed long lunches, Thursday night sports, and regular Friday night drinks, without much regard for what she was handling at home.

The woman said she always tried to support him in his work and would "happily" give him time to unwind. But there was one issue she couldn’t ignore — she wanted him to let her know what his plans were. Unfortunately, he "absolutely hated" doing that simple thing.

"It was a weird shift in our marriage that I hadn't expected – this stubborn reluctance to tell us when he was going to participate in our lives." she admitted.

This ongoing problem sparked constant arguments, and she could feel the foundation of their marriage slowly breaking apart.

The breaking point finally came when she glanced at some messages on his phone after he returned home late one night.

"This morning, he'd woken at 8am, and headed straight for the shower, without even checking in on me and the baby in the kitchen – meaning that we hadn't seen him since the previous morning." she recalled.

"But evidently, my husband had made the time to send a few replies. I didn't know what to make of his last one, which read:"

"'Don't think I can make it tonight. SWMBO will say no.'"

SWMBO isn’t exactly a common acronym, so she was confused when she first saw it in his messages. Like most people would, she decided to ask him directly what it stood for.

Her husband casually explained that it meant “She Who Must Be Obeyed.” In that moment, she wrote, "I felt like I'd been slapped in the face."

"It wasn't a matter of 'obeying' me, or asking my permission, as he often complained. It's not called 'asking permission' like he's a teenager and I'm his mother."

"It's called respect. Courtesy in checking to see if you're needed – to say what your plans are."

That was all she needed to hear. The following week, she packed up, took her baby, and made the decision to leave her husband for good.

She explained her reasoning clearly: "To me, I didn't have a choice. Staying with a man who valued us so little wasn't an option."
