A woman has revealed a brand-new "penny dating method" that has left a large number of people divided.

Many dating trends have been debated online throughout the years, particularly with the rise of TikTok.

On the well-known video-sharing website, there has been discussion of a potentially harmful dating strategy that entails treating investing in a relationship like putting your hard-earned money into a piggy bank.

The 'penny dating strategy' basically entails giving a relationship your all right from the beginning and then gradually reducing your effort and commitment over time.

Although it is typical to invest more energy in a new relationship than it is after three years, there is a terrible reason to invest less in this dating strategy.

The partner feels fortunate enough to receive the barest minimum before the amount of effort is reduced.

Thanks to a viral video that popular TikToker Erika Tham posted explaining the seemingly common strategy, dating has recently been more widely accepted.

Tham started the video by describing how she had just discussed "love bombing" with a male friend.

Of course, many will recognize this as lavishing a partner with attention at the beginning of a relationship—which isn't unusual, is it?

At this point, Tham learned something really startling from his male friend: it seems that some guys engage in "penny dating," which is a practice in which they treat women like "piggy banks."

"To get her interested obviously at first you have to be feeding her hundred dollar bills," the male friend told the TikToker.

"Now here’s where it gets sick."

In order to please their spouse, the person essentially modifies the amount of effort they put in, sometimes even increasing it before decreasing it again.

"The next thing you do is bring it back up to 95. Instead of feeling like they’ve lost 5, suddenly she feels like she’s gained 5," the friend apparently said.

"Basically you just keep repeating this cycle and weaning her off your effort until you get to the point where you’re giving her pennies and suddenly, she’s excited to receive a nickel," Tham added.

The apparent technique appalled a lot of people, as thousands of people raced to the comments area to express their opinions.

"Penny method is CRAZY," one person penned.

A second added: "You can't convince me this isn't psychological torture."

While a third wrote: "MY JAW DROPPED wha-."

Someone else commented: "That's sooo evil."

And a final user penned: "Never leaving my house again."
