Woman Stopped Using Deodorant For 7 Days, What Happened Will Surprise You
Introduction
Deodorants are such staple items that you probably can't imagine them out of your life. But deodorants, just like most of the products we use in our everyday lives, have chemicals that tend to be harmful with overuse. Deodorants have aluminum, which can clog up the sweat glands. And what's worse is that you can have aluminum buildup if you keep on using deodorants.
This is why some women are trying to go without deodorant for at least a week. Although this may seem like a difficult challenge for you, considering the wet armpits and body odor at the end of the day, but this woman decided to give it a try anyway.
First Day:
She was self-conscious as she apologized to everyone about her armpits. However, no one really noticed because they actually didn't smell bad.
"Woo! It was 83 degrees today, but I guess it could be worse. I didn't have much planned and I was okay with that. Regardless, I still felt self-conscious about not wearing deodorant and wanted to shower. I figured that, hopefully, if I started to sweat, people would smell my grapefruit body wash and not sweaty B.O. I worked from home and sat right in front of the air conditioning vent. Ah, sweat could not reach me there.
At some point, I realized we had no food in the house and I was starving. Dang it. My plan for staying in all day didn't work. My goal was to book it to the store, grab something in the frozen aisle (which also had the benefit of keeping me cool), and then book it home. Well, of course, because I live in a small town, I ran into someone I knew from high school at the store. I instantly felt myself sweating as soon as I remembered I wasn't wearing deodorant. What if she could smell me? What if my sweat started to show through my shirt? This was only the first day and I was already in a frenzy! I tried focusing on the conversation, and boom, it was over before I knew it. Back home finally! It's a dangerous world out there without deodorant on. I was excited to be home safe, in front of my air conditioner."
Second Day:
Unfortunately, during the second day, the odor was strong that it was almost overwhelming.
"Spaghetti straps day! Let's do it! I planned to go on a hike with a friend in the morning because I'm a crazy woman. I also made the plans a while ago, and forgot I wasn't supposed to be wearing deodorant. I reached for my Secret deodorant out of habit, then hesitantly put it back down. I left for my hike, and as soon as I stepped outside, I knew I was going to be in trouble. It was already around 83 degrees, and it was only 10 AM, so I knew it was going to be scorching later on. I met my friend at the trail and we left for our two hour hike. Besides it being blistering hot, the hike was absolutely beautiful. The mountains were majestic and the dry wind even provided a subtle breeze!
It wasn't until we turned around and started walking back to the car when it became awful. The sun was directly in our faces and that's when it happened I started smelling myself. At first, I thought someone brought Mexican food on the trail. I'm not even kidding. Immediately, I poured water on myself to try to cool down as much as I could. That helped, and my Chipotle scent vanished. I was ecstatic about reaching the car because that meant shower time. Ugh. I felt gross."
Third Day:
A hiking trip exposed her to the most pungent smells she would encounter. This would be her worst day.
"I made a pretty stupid decision today. I wore a polyester t-shirt, AKA one of the least breathable fabrics you can wear. I just had to run some errands, but it was definitely uncomfortable getting my oil changed, returning library books, shipping a package, and buying a school supplies while dripping sweat. I am not exaggerating when saying that either. I felt my t-shirt, and there were literally drips from my arm pits! So. Gross. Who am I?
Honestly, sweating as much as I did was unpleasant and not fun at all. I was grumpy because I was hot and there was literally nothing I could do about the sweat. At that moment, I just wanted to reach into my car and grab that emergency stick of anti-perspirant I have in there, but nope! I didn't. As soon as I got home, I immediately hopped into the shower and cooled down. Toxins or no toxins, this was the worst day, and I want to be able to wear polyester without sweating a lake!"
Fourth Day:
When she woke up on the fourth day without deodorant, the smell of her armpits were no longer too powerful. It could be because she was getting used to it or it could also be that the odor was getting more subtle. She also walked around town and was surprised that she didn't sweat as much as she would if she wore deodorant on.
"Now that my temper tantrum had ended, I was pretty sure a good day was finally going to come my way. I had to film something at my house and wanted to dress comfortably for the shoot. It was going to be an odd shoot, for sure, because I had to put a piñata on my head and dance around. Yes, very, very odd. I paired my fashionable piñata with a striped and BREATHABLE tank top. Ok, so I'm still not over the polyester thing, whatever.
I had to act and be the camera woman, so I definitely was moving all over the place. Although filming was a lot of fun, it can be a little nerve wracking at times. Constantly seeing if the lighting is good, the lens is focused, the framing looks good, I know my lines, etc. is a lot to keep track of, especially for one person! As if I wasn't sweating enough, I was sweating bullets when I had to do all of that with the piñata on my head. It was definitely hot in there, but I had to finish! As soon as I was done, I was dripping in sweat from that piñata being on my head. Another shower to prevent Mexican food smell, here I come! After my shower, I relaxed next to my air conditioning vent, yet again."
Fifth Day:
She decided it was time to test out some natural sweat and odor blockers to varriying degrees of success.
"I decided to try an experiment. Spinach is known to have chlorophyll in it, which supposedly helps stops persistent sweating. Apple cider vinegar is also believed to neutralize body odor when ingested. I decided to get both of these in my system by making a giant salad with both of these ingredients. It was an easy way to get some veggies in my body while also hopefully preventing my body from melting. I chopped up the spinach, cut up some tomatoes and bell peppers, and tossed the salad in a dressing I made from apple cider vinegar. I love apple cider vinegar, so it was very easy to create a delicious salad!
I loved that salad so much, I would definitely make it again. I also stirfried some tofu and ate that as well. Now to report on my sweat production: I cannot say I found much of a difference. It could be something where I had to eat these ingredients every day for a while to see some sort of effect, but as for now, I was still sweating. Additionally, the heat was relentless today, 102 degrees, so I'm sure that didn't help too much. I was really hoping my salad would help out my sweating, but oh well, at least I have a new recipe I love!"
Sixth Day:
On the 6th day her air conditioner broke and all hell broke loose.
"My air conditioning broke. I repeat: MY AIR CONDITIONING BROKE. Someone, let me live with you. Anyone! I'll cook your food, tell you jokes, and milk your cows if you have any place I can stay. Just please, take me some where with A/C. It was awful. I woke up and shut all the windows in the house when I noticed the house was 81 degrees inside. Yikes. So, I turned on the air and what happened? Nothing happened. I turned it off and turned it on again, and then what happened? NOTHING HAPPENED. This news was just tragic.
I immediately opened some windows, gathered all the fans in my house, and blew some good old 85 degree house air on me. Ah, the good life. I then realized I have about five ice packs in the freezer and started laying them on my body. This most definitely helped along with chugging my ice cold water. Even though I was staying cool, the air around me was hot and gross, so I headed over to my local air conditioned library. I decided to just bring my laptop, sit on a comfy couch, and do my work from there. Not only did I get all my work done, but I did some of the stuff I was planning to do! See, people? This is why I should move into your air conditioned house! I'll work hard for you!"
Seventh Day:
The final day! Her air conditioner was fixed and she couldn't be happier!
"Well, good news. My air conditioner is fixed! My handy dad came on by and fixed it to perfection! Ah, I can breathe! Since I was mostly going to be staying at home for the day, I tried wearing a basic white t-shirt to see if that would help out with the heat. Maybe it could help me stay even cooler! Plus, it was cotton, so it was a more breathable fabric.
The white t-shirt was surprisingly one of the cooler shirts that I've worn through the week, maybe because the fabric is so light. I also went swimming, because, duh, that'll help with the heat. My sister moved out recently, so I invited her to our community pool so we could tread some water and catch up. After that, my family grabbed some dinner and I went home and showered. I'm free! My armpits are free!"
Conclusion:
For people who sweat moderately, going deodorant-free could be acceptable. However, for those who sweat more, natural alternatives, such as crystal deodorant, could keep the stench away without worrying about the harmful chemicals.
"Wow, this was really tricky, and definitely one of the weeks I've felt most self-conscious about. While I could see how some people maybe feel more "natural" being deodorant free, I felt the opposite. I hated it, knowing that at any point, I could start stinking up the place. Of course, maybe some people couple this with a complimenting diet that assists with this problem, but one thing I know for sure: deodorant free is not for me. I don't think I could ever see myself doing this again. I like smelling good and being in control of that! Secret anti-perspirant, I've missed you, friend!"
