In March 2011, Ka Yang was alone with her daughter, Mirabelle Thao-Lo, for a period of 11 minutes, according to a news release from the Sacramento County District Attorney's Office.

During that time, Yang, 34, microwaved the infant for 2½ to 5 minutes, the news release states.

First responders found Mirabelle fully clothed with serious burns from head to toe, according to an arrest warrant. An autopsy revealed the baby girl died from "extensive thermal injuries," police said.

Yang initially told investigators she blacked out after having a seizure and dropped the baby on a space heater, according to the warrant.

Detectives were investigating Yang's claim when they found inconsistencies in her story and found a baby's pacifier located inside the kitchen microwave, the document adds.

Detectives consulted with medical professionals and forensic specialists before concluding that the infant's burns were consistent with three documented cases in Ohio, Virginia and Texas where children were burned in microwaves.

Yang later said she microwaved her daughter after suffering a seizure, in what is called a postictal state, according to the district attorney's office.

Although Yang had a history of seizures, paramedics did not find her to be disoriented when they arrived.

"Operating a microwave oven is a complex task that would be difficult or impossible for someone during or after a grand mal or tonic-clonic type seizure," a neurologist told investigators. "It may be possible with other less severe types of complex partial seizures but those types of seizures are not generally associated with blacking out and falling down or complete memory loss."

Yang faces 26 years to life in prison when she is sentenced on December 18.
