It's been a long time since 2007.

That was the worst year of Britney Spears' decades-spanning career. It might have been the worst year of her life, replete with custody battles, lawyers, and -- at every turn -- the blinding flash of the camera.

Then there was that disastrous performance at the MTV Video Music Awards.

Spears thought the appearance would be the beginning of her great comeback. Instead, it sent her further into a spiral of despair.

Simon Cowell famously described the performance as the "three minutes that could ruin [Spears'] career."

She performed "Gimme More," but her outfit, her dance moves, and even her body were roundly criticized in the days following the VMA's.

Critics blasted Spears for having lost definition in her abs.

That's a pretty cruel perspective on a woman who had just given birth to her second child months before the performance.

Plus, Spears was still fighting her way out of a very public nervous breakdown.

Remember when she shaved her head? At that MTV VMA performance, she was wearing lots of extensions.

At the time, the singer was 25 years old.

We don't know about you, but we're pretty sure we were a bit crazy at 25. But Spears was having her psychological growing pains in full view of the public, which only made things worse.

Things are much better for the pop star and mother of two today.

She's performing again. She's recording again. And, as this list shows, she has her body back in peak condition.

These days, Spears seems to have everything under control.

She just renewed her residency at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in Las Vegas. That netted her a cool $35 million.

You might raise an eyebrow at a casino show, but remember that Spears is a mom.

Her predictable schedule at Planet Hollywood allows her to prioritize her children. Touring makes that really hard.

Britney Spears may be the only modern pop star to survive a failed comeback, only to turn around and rise again.

With a new record on the way, the world will finally get to know an older, more mature Britney. She made it through 2007. Now we get to hear her tell her story.
