Over 1.6 Million People Die Each Year From This. I Had No Idea!
#1 Modern Technology Has It's Downside
We all love things that are new, exciting and current... such as technological gadgets. We are addicted to our laptops, wireless connections, the internet, and smartphones. Unfortunately, there is a rather frightening host of downsides to becoming more tech-savvy.
#2 Everybody Has A Phone But At What Cost?
With all good things there comes some caution, and it's difficult to understand at the moment, just how dangerous a smartphone can be in the long term. There are also many dangers to letting children use phones that parents and adults should know about.
#3 Injuries And Accidents
43% of people using a cell phone while walking have, at some point, walked right into a wall. Pedestrians who text are generally four times more likely to be unaware of street signs and traffic lights, and sometimes walk directly in to traffic or other people. But, that's nothing compared to the over 1.5 million people who end up in the hospital, or dead every year because they dared to text behind the wheel. Using a phone while driving has now equaled the number of deaths or injuries of drunk drivers.
#4 Posture-Related Disorders
Maintaining the same position for a long period of time can be detrimental to your health, in more ways than one. Most people have some sort of posture realated health problems, like carpel tunnel, and don't even know it...YET.
#5 Screen Fatigue
Avoid staring at the same thing, like a computer or phone for long periods of time. It can cause 'screen fatigue' and it is harmful to your eyes and well being. Your eyes, forehead, and temples will throb and hurt, sometimes for hours on end, causing severe headaches. For every 10 minutes staring at a screen, you should look at something different for 20 minutes or more to keep your eyes healthy.
#6 Relationship Issues
If you spend more time on the computer, or on your phone than you do with your partner or family, you are in grave danger. A recent study has shown that people with a partner who is more concerned with what is happening on their smartphones, are more likely to leave that relationship. Spending the majority of your time with your face pressed up against a phone screen leaves little time for developing a healthy partnership. Don't lose out on life. Nothing beats a face to face chat or actual voice call... not even a text.
#7 Reduced Attention Span
People who use their phones and listen to people talk at the same time exhibit a 37 percent loss of brain activity. The more attached you are to your phone, the shorter your attention span and ability to focus. You lose interest quickly and can rarely carry on a lengthy conversation.
#8 Sleeping Problems
Phone use before bedtime is now a common practice. But people are unaware that the brightly lit screen can actually suppress melatonin production, and cause a host of sleeping problems, like insomnia. Looking at that tiny screen engages your brain but not in the way reading a good book will. It puts you in a state of alertness, which is the last thing you want to be before going to bed.
#9 Disconnection With Friends And Family
Smartphones can greatly alter our social behavior. Many kids and teenagers lack sufficient social skills because they spend way too much time on their phones. They are becoming unaware of what actual reality holds beyond that screen. They become obsessed with their electronics, and disconnected with the world around them. The kids usually learn from what they see, which means that parents should ease up on the use of smartphones a bit more and begin actually interacting with their family before it's too late.
#10 Identity Theft
Many believe that since that phone is theirs and in their possession, they don't need to log out of the apps they use on their phones. Places where their identity and personal i formation is stored. When you browse the internet from your phone, you may not always be protected by a firewall or an antivirus, thereby putting your device at risk. A skilled hacker or strong virus may then very easily steal or leak important information, photos, and personal data.
#11 Damage To The Spine And Neck
This is what you look like when you stare at your phones. Your posture and spine are being twisted in ways it should not have to endure in long periods. The neck inches forward, the shoulders round or lift upward, and, most notably, the neck and shoulder muscles spasm and contract. Try not to hunch over your smartphones if you want to avoid pestering muscle pain, and strained spinal discs, which can lead to a severe chronic condition of severe pain and possibly arthritis.
