After being mauled by her cousin's dog, Brooklinn Khoury lost her lip for a year, but she has since learned to accept herself and deal with the criticism she encounters.
Despite the vicious comments of online trolls who claimed she resembles The Grinch, a lady who survived a horrifying dog attack has learned to accept herself.
Two years ago, when Brooklinn Khoury was bitten by her cousin's dog and had her top lip chewed off, her life underwent a significant transformation. Brooklinn is from Mission Viejo in California, US.
The pitbull was tossing her head and latching onto the skateboarder's top lip for 45 seconds until something was "flung up the wall."
Despite being taken urgently to the hospital, Brooklinn spent a year without an upper lip because they couldn't locate a surgeon to treat her injuries.
The 23-year-old, who spoke online about her recovery, said she is "blessed" to have met an incredible surgeon who is giving her smile a second chance.
"I am surrounded by so many people who love and support me from the inside and out, and I am taking life day by day, and trusting the process," she said.
Brooklinn underwent six surgeries in the previous year, including a skin transplant from the inside of her arm.
There were times when people called her "the Grinch" or "Cat in the Hat" and made fun of the way she looked in their comments.
But by making fun of it, she transformed the negative ideas into constructive deeds.
She even mimicked the Grinch's facial expressions in one video.
Brooklinn explained: "I know that I look very different, and people are always going to have something to say about it."
"So I just try to make the best out of the situation if I can by laughing and responded by making a TikTok of me replicating pictures of both the Grinch and Cat in the Hat."
"I just try to not to take those comments too seriously. People are always going to say hurtful things so it’s better to just ignore them if you can."
But sometimes the offensive remarks have a negative impact on her emotional state.
She explained: "One time I was actually sitting at Disneyland alone waiting for my friend, when this man and his family came up to me. He looked at me and said you know who you look like, Homer Simpson, him and his family started laughing and they walked away."
"When I figured out what he meant I was pretty upset by how one comment could so quickly ruin my day."
With having to relearn how to eat and speak words, Brooklinn has found it difficult to manage everyday responsibilities.
The young woman disclosed that she will need to undergo another two reconstructive surgery before she can see the results.
Despite surviving the horrifying incident, Brooklinn maintained her love of dogs.
"I still love dogs! I have a dog of my own, and I take her to the dog park daily," she told the site.
"I would say I am definitely more cautious around dogs, because I know what they are capable of doing, but I could never fear them!"
