A Redditor asked for advice on the AITA sub asking whether he was wrong for refusing to buy a $10k engagement ring for his fiance who supported him through an accident. The internet fully put him in his place.
10k On An Engagement Ring? Man Refuses Even Though He Can Afford It
Buying a ring is one of the most stressful parts of getting engaged. forget the cut and style, the price tag that comes with this hopefully once-in-a-lifetime purchase is enough to shake anyone in their boots. So the question is, are they worth it?
That's what Reddit user u/Dry-Body-7578 asked Reddit when he was finally ready to pop the question to his fiance.
He said that his girlfriend had always grown up comfortable but despite her background was a relatively low-maintenance person.
He also added that he had a well-paying job and had been saving.
He thought hs fiance would be on the same page when it came to buying rings i.e. a cheaper one.
OP showed her moissanite rings that he felt would fit the bill.
His girlfriend, to his surprise, was in an entirely different book. She said she wanted a real diamond as is the custom with wedding rings. When he looked up the prices, he was shocked to see they cost up to $10,000.
He was also surprised by his girlfriend's anger when she said that the $10k 'wasn't that expensive'.
When she asked whether she was worth the purchase he said, "no one is". Ouch.
His girlfriend finally caved and left the decision up to him even though she was still clearly upset.
He said this came as a shock to him and he never expected her to want a diamond.
He finally spoke to his older sister who took his girlfriend's side saying that he could clearly afford the money and reminded him of all his girlfriend did for him.
OP clarified that his girlfriend had supported him through a major accident.
During this time she covered most bills when it came to their and OP's expenses.
She let him move in free of charge, paid for his physical therapy, and even helped him get a job.
He said that even though his girlfirend did all of that, he still didn't feel obligated to shell out the money for the ring.
In a later edit, he said he was reconsidering and decided to discuss it further with his girlfriend. Whether he got the diamond or even got married remains a mystery because he never posted again.
Commenters were in disbelief, especially after hearing the many ways in which she had supported OP through crisis.
Some were more direct with their opinions.
Another commenter said that she not only deserved a diamond ring but also an apology.
