13 Of The Most Expensive Car Accidents Ever Recorded.
#1 Ultra-Rare, Ultra Secret
This Ferrari 250 GTO is one of only 39 ever made, and this one spent two years being repaired by Ferrari Classiche after an accident. There aren't any photos of the car pre-collision and there were never any public statements as to the cost. This is what it looked like when it recently sold at auction for $38.1 Million USD.
#2 Multi-Car Crash In Morocco
A woman caused a five car mess in front of the Place du Casino in Morocco. She was driving a Bentley Azure and managed to hit a Mercedes S Class, a Ferrari F430, an Aston Martin Rapide and a Porsche 911. The total value of cars involved was well over $1 million, but thankfully damages were minimal. There is video footage of the accident here.
#3 Eddie Griffin Destroys Someone Else's Car
While promoting his film Redline, Eddie drove executive producer Daniel Sadek's Ferrari Enzo into a concrete wall, damaging it beyond repair. The Ferarri is one of 400 Enzo's ever made and valued at $1.5 million.
#4 Eight Ferrari's, one Lamborghini and a Mercedes.
In what sounds like a bad movie title, 14 cars were involved in a chain reaction crash on a Japanese highway that also involved a Nissan GT-R Skyline and a Toyota Prius. The Ferrari models involved in the pile-up include a F355, F512, F355, F430 and a F360. While no one was seriously injured, the cars were almost all completely totaled, resulting in over $4 million in damages.
#5 Pagani Zonda F Clubport Roadster
One of only 25 in existence, 28 year old owner Steffen Korbach smashed this former beauty into a barrier when he lost control on a wet road in Italy. Reports say he was driving the appropriate speed limit and both he and his passenger emerged from the wreck with only minor bruising. The car is valued at $2.1 million new and was irreparably damaged.
#6 Soggy Bugatti
Andy Lee House crashed his $1 Million 2006 Bugatti Veyron into the water near Galveston, Texas in 2009 in order to collect on the $2.2 million collectors' insurance policy he had taken out on the car. To ensure the car couldn't be repaired, he left the engine running, flooding it with dirty water and mud. He eventually plead guilty to intentionally doing it, and now faces up to 20 years in prison. There is video of the incident, though the language is NSFW.
#7 Rowan Atkinson Destroys His McLaren F1
This ultra-rare super car is one of 64 F1s ever built. Rowan bought it new in 1997 and has driven it around for 17 years, resulting in two devastating accidents. The most recent time was in 2011 where he received the highest insurance payout for the repairs at £910,000 or $1.38 M USD.
#8 Classic Ferrari Crushed
This Ferrari 275 GTB/C slammed into the wall of a track at the 2013 Imola Classic. The car is valued at $3 to 4.5 million so the damage must have cost quite a bit to repair.
#9 Rocked Like A Hurricane
As an owner of an expensive car, you'd think you would store it in a safe place. Instead, this owner decided to store his at the beach presumably so that other people would stare at it. That idea backfired on him when Hurricane Ivan swept through Florida in 2008 and filled it with sand. This $10 million car was a total write off.
#10 Driver Error
This black Rolls Royce Ghost was involved in a collision with a Toyota Corolla when the driver decided to do a U-Turn. The drivers were okay, but the Ghost was written off.
#11 A Ghost Meets A Phantom
Back in 2009, a two Rolls Royce Phantoms were involved in a collision together. Considering there were only 5000 globally in 2009, the coincidence is extremely bizarre, but even more so, was that it was a hit and run. The driver of a gold-topped Rolls Royce hit a parked Rolls Royce Drophead and drove away to his hotel. There are no pictures of the crash itself, but this is the car that caused the collision. Oddly enough, it hasn't been seen around Munich since then.
#12 Gullwing Disaster
At the 2014 Mille Migilia in Italy, a Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing valued at $1.1 million was destroyed when it collided head-on with a BMW 1 Series.
#13 1958 Ferrari 250 Testarossa
Thankfully this accident took place on a closed track and with a tire (not concrete) wall and the driver is okay. Damage estimates weren't made public, but the car itself is valued around $8 or 10 million dollars, so the cost of damages must be hefty.
