#1 Never dry an umbrella while it’s still open.

Whether you’re at a restaurant or in someone’s home, you should always fold your umbrella up to dry it off. Using an umbrella stand or a hook is always a good call, too.

#2 Never visit someone without letting them know first.

Whilst a surprise visit from your loved one may be a wonderful treat, often getting ‘surprised’ by a friend you may not be too keen on seeing can be a bit of an inconvenience. It’s bad enough having to answer the door to the postman in your dressing gown!

#3 Plastic bags should only be used when going to and from the grocery store.

If you’re using them for things like packing overnight bags, it could come off as a bit tacky.

#4 If a child has their own room, you need to knock.

Even though it’s your house, it’s still nice to knock before entering your child’s room. Not only is it respectful to them, but it also sets a great example.

#5 When you are at home you should wear pants and a sweater.

This way you can be comfortable, but also look neat and tidy. It’s not nice to stay in the same clothes all day that you have slept in.

#6 It is acceptable for a woman to wear a hat and gloves indoors.

However, a cap and mittens should always be removed upon entry.

#7 Inviting someone to a restaurant insinuates that you’ll be paying.

It’s implied that you’ll be covering the bill if you’re the one who suggests going.

#8 The person who exits an elevator first is always the one who is closest to the door.

This stops the awkward shuffling around people.

#9 The most prestigious seat in a car is always behind a driver.

If there is a man driving the car, the woman should sit behind the man. When the car stops, wherever the man is sat, he should open a door for her and help her to get out of a car.

#10 If you are getting to your seat make sure to face the people already seated.

If you are in the middle of a row where people are seated in the cinema, or theatre, don’t go in with your back turned to the people already seated.

#11 There are four things you should never make small talk over.

When making small talk, be sure to avoid these four topics: politics, religion, health, and money.

#12 Never gossip about someone who is absent.

Talking about someone in a negative light who is absent is always unacceptable. Not only is it plain rude, but it shows the other person that you cannot be trusted.

#13 It’s better to keep these nine things to yourself.

Age, wealth, family issues, religion, medical problems, love affairs, gifts, honor and disgrace.
