#1 Bloody Mary
Perhaps the most persistent of all urban legends is that of Bloody Mary. According to the legend, if you turn out all of the lights in your house and say the words "Bloody Mary" three times while looking into a mirror, the ghastly and terrifying spectre of the long dead witch will appear. It is also sometimes said that this ritual will draw the attention of the evil spirit who will then haunt you and your house.
#2 The Hook
According to the story, a young couple was once driving down a lonely stretch of highway in the middle of the night when the man pulls over to relieve himself in the nearby woods. While his girlfriend waits for him to return, a special broadcast comes over the radio announcing that a mental patient with a hook for a hand has escaped from a nearby mental hospital. The man returns and as they drive off they notice a scraping noise coming from outside the car. When they pull over to investigate, they find a bloody hook hanging from the drivers side door handle, presumably removed from the arm of the killer when they unknowingly and narrowly escaped.
#3 When a stranger calls
This is a classic and continues to terrify teens to this day. The story is of a young teenage girl who's home alone for the first time while her parents are out for the evening. Feeling very adult she spends the night chatting with her friends on the telephone when a strange call comes in from the other line. It's a creepy man's voice who begins to ask a variety of personal questions. The young girl gets the police to trace the call, only to find out that the call is coming from inside her own house!
#4 The vanishing hitch-hiker
On a dark stretch of road in the middle of the night a young man stops to pick up a lone hitchhiker in the form of a beautiful woman. The man takes the woman to her destination with little or no conversation. When he arrives at the address the woman gave him he turns around to find the woman has completely vanished. Frightened and curious the man goes up to the door at the address and asks if a young woman lives there and gives the description of his hitchhiker. The person who answers the door explains that the person he is describing is their daughter who disappeared 20 years earlier and was never heard from again.
#5 The Clown Statue
A teenage girl takes a job babysitting two children to make extra money. Since the parents will be gone late into the evening they make up a bed for her to sleep in the room with her children. When she puts the kids to bed she notices a life-sized clown statue in their room that is really disturbing. When the kids finally go to bed she makes a phone call to their father and asks if it would be ok for her to switch rooms because the clown statue is really freaking her out. The father tells her to get the kids and go to the neighbors house and call the police immediately. She does as he tells her then calls him back and asks why. He says "We don't have a clown statue!". He then goes onto explain that the children have been complaining about the clown that watches them sleep, but the parents had dismissed it as over active imaginations.
#6 Stolen Kidneys
A married business man meets a beautiful young woman at a hotel bar during a business trip without his wife. The woman flirts with him and he decides to have an affair with her, but shortly after he gets to his room he passes out. When he wakes up he's in a bathtub full of ice next to a phone with a note that says "Your kidneys have been removed, call 911."
#7 Don't turn on the lights
Two female college roommates have to prepare for an up coming final, but one of the girls decides she's going to go out and party instead of study. When the girl who stayed in to study is awakened in the middle of the night by muffled sounds from her roommate's bed, she assumes the girl brought home her boyfriend and doesn't turn on the light to investigate. The following morning she wakes up to find her roommate murdered and the message "Aren't you glad you didn't turn on the light?" scrawled on the wall in her dead roommate's blood.
#8 Humans can lick too
A teenage girl wakes up in the middle of the night by a strange scratching noise coming from outside her bedroom. She gets up to investigate and finds nothing so she goes back to bed. The scratching continues and the girl begins to get scared. Her pet dog always sleeps underneath her bed so she puts her hand down to feel the reassureing lick of her K-9 protector before she falls asleep. The next morning she wakes up to find her dog murdered and an note attached to it's body that said "Humans can lick too."
#9 Death at make-out point
Two teenage lovers pull up to their local make-out spot when they hear a radio broadcast about and escaped murderer on the loose in the area. The girl becomes frightened and wants to leave but the boyfriend wants to stay. The girl swears she sees someone outside in the woods and the boy goes to investigate. He is gone for a long time and the girl starts to hear strange thumps coming from the roof of the car. When she gets up the nerve to investigate, she finds the severed head of her boyfriend hanging from a rope and hitting the roof of the car.
#10 Dead body under hotel bed
A newly-wed couple staying at a Las Vegas hotel had their honeymoon ruined by a strange and disgusting smell in their hotel room. After complaining of the smell several times the couple decides to investigate the smell on their own by removing the mattress from it's pedestal, only to find that a rotting corpse beneath the bed. Perhaps the scariest part of this urban legend is that it's actually true. According to the myth debunking website Snopes.com there have been at least 10 confirmed cases of this happening since the 1980's.
#11 Hanging in a haunted house
In order to make a haunted house attraction as scary as possible the owner decides to host a fake hanging as part of the event. The show goes off without a hitch for the first few nights, but one night the safety cable supporting the actor breaks and he/she is actually hanged by mistake. The onlookers watch in horror as the actor spasms in pain, but no one makes a move to help as they assume it's all part of the show. The actor dies and the corpse is hanged over and over again throughout the night until when closing up shop the other employees notice the horrible mistake. This is another urban legend that happens to be completely true.
#12 Buried alive
The story of the unfortunate person who is accidentally buried alive is one that dates back hundreds of years. According to this urban legend a mortally wounded or ill individual is presumed to be dead (usually at a time before modern medicine when a doctor's ability to determine death might have been limited) and is buried before they are fully deceased. Proof is often given in the way of scrap marks and broken fingernails on corpses that have been dug up at a later point in time for one reason or another. This one is also true, but the frequency at which it happens is impossible to determine.
#13 Death by hairstyle
Back in the 1950's when the beehive hairdo was popular, a stylish teenage girl had grown tired of having to spray and tease her hair everyday in order create the desired look. She decided to soak her hair in sugar water and let it dry into the perfect hairstyle that would last for a much longer time. After three weeks without a bad hair day she didn't come down for breakfast one morning and her parents found her dead in her bed. During the autopsy it was discovered that her head had become infested with a nest of black widow spiders that had bitten her repeatedly until she died.
#14 Mothman
The Mothman is a moth like creature with glowing red eyes that was repeatedly spotted in the town of Point Pleasant, West Virginia in 1966. According to legend a large scale disaster shortly after the appearance of the Mothman, as was the case with the Silver Bridge collapse which killed an estimated 46 people.
#15 Explodong cactus
A woman bought a cactus from a local nursery and brought it home. Later that same day, she noticed that the cactus seemed to be moving in and out, almost as if it were breathing. When the woman called the nursery about this mysterious activity, the attendant immediately shouted, "Get the cactus out of the house right now!" As soon as she had moved the cactus outside, thousands of spiders exploded from the inside!
