Whether you're 12 or 22, it's hard to break the ice with guys. Friends, family, basically everyone will give you their two cents (and let's face it, their advice will be terrible), so wouldn't it be great if there was just one standard line or phrase you could use to talk to guys to instantly strike up a conversation and then you could figure it out from there? Well, now there is, and it's so good it's turned into an internet sensation.
SHARE this crazy story on Facebook. I can't believe it worked.
#1 Meet Caitlin Whitlock.
Caitlin is a 21-year-old Alpha Chi Delta at Michigan State who has started a huge craze and encouraged hundreds of young women to work up the courage to strike up a conversation with men.
#2 And the book that inspired this whole thing.
American Girl Library's A Smart Girl's Guide to Boys. This book came out in 2001 and had all sorts of helpful advice from being friends, going out, breaking up, and more. Caitlin found her old copy at her parents' house and decided to peruse it and see if anything inside might be useful.
#3 There were plenty of suggestions, but Caitlin picked this one (it's pretty clear to see why).
"I wish they'd teach us more about Vikings". That's it. Simple, clear, and concise. Totally sounds like a flop, but just see how it did...
#4 Conversation started alright.
Probably not a scintillating conversation, but a conversation nonetheless.
#5 Perfect opportunity to set up a date.
He's basically begging to be invited over to cuddle on your couch now.
#6 And now you've learned something.
It's actually surprising how many guys are into talking about vikings.
#7 It doesn't always work.
Just a warning.
#8 But when it does, it's kinda nice.
Like super-authentic get-to-know-you type talking.
#9 Eventually this method got so popular, a meme was created.
Obviously by some dude who had received the same text on more than one occasion and began to question its origin.
#10 It's legitimately getting people dates.
Which is both awesome and adorable.
#11 Though it might be helpful to do a little research or keep Google open, just in case.
You never know what someone's going to reply! It's just so intriguing.
