7 Of The Worst Things Hollywood Gets Wrong About Being In A Sorority

During the weeklong process of sorority recruitment, a Potential New Member (PNM) can talk to around five sisters per house. Conversation topics range anywhere from clichéd banter, such as social events or summer plans, to interesting chatter, like a cool vacation you took or unique hobbies. But regardless of where the discussion goes, there are some things a sorority girl will just never spill to a PNM.
On the outside looking in, the customs of Greek life may seem transparent: socials every week, frat tanks for days and throwing up your sorority’s sign whenever possible. However, there are many aspects you’d only get to know once you join.
Hollywood loves a good sorority movie, but unfortunately there are quite a few things they get egregiously wrong about actual sorority life.
#1 Sororities host crazy house parties
The misconception that all they do is party and get drunk is so irritating. Are there some people that go out and get drunk? Of course, but that's in every social group as well. Sorority and fraternity members are no more likely than others to be getting drunk every weekend. Besides, they can have fun just their selves too. They have movie nights and they watch sports games together, not necessarily always drinking.
#2 Sorority girls are all ditzy bimbos
The movies may portray things like this, but they also show a lot of other things that aren't true. If you know the media and Hollywood portray other things incorrectly, why would you believe it about a group of hundreds of thousands of people? Besides, they do have GPA requirements to remain a member, some more than others.
In fact, sororities hold academic standards to which each sister must adhere or face restrictions on social and other events. Houses require study hours for sisters and new members and most also offer academic mentoring and tutoring between older and younger sisters.
#3 All sorority girls look the same
As for real sororities, not everyone is tall, tan, and blonde. At their core, sororities are about women supporting each other and that extends to inner and outer beauty no matter your body's appearance, hair color or nationality.
#4 Sororities are always fighting with each other
Sorority and fraternity members are involved all over campus, perhaps in more places than you think. They enjoy getting involved with their campus which is why they went through recruitment in the first place.
#5 All sorority girls are bitchy and judgmental
A sorority or fraternity is like a club. It's made up of so many different people. Of course, you aren't going to absolutely love each and every person. In a sorority, you're not required to. They just ask you to respect each other. Just as you wouldn't talk badly about someone who's an officer in your club or a professor.
#6 They're All Rich
Just because they are in a fraternity or sorority, doesn't mean that mommy or daddy foots the bill all of the time. They work in addition to being in a sorority and some of their sisters even have two jobs. Yes, there are some who's parents pay for it, but it's a case by case basis.
#7 Sorority girls drink, party, and sleep around excessively
Yes, many girls in sororities enjoy partying, drinking and sex as much as any young woman has the right to. But college is also a time rife with partying, drinking and sex, for sorority sisters and everyone else. And honestly, huge open fraternity parties are generally populated by people who aren't a part of Greek Life at all. Fraternities and sororities hold their own lower-key mixers with only one fraternity and one sorority which are much more enjoyable parties where you actually get to know the brothers and spend time with your sisters.

While sororities will probably never be really understood or appreciated by those who were not members, dispelling antiquated and false stereotypes is a start.
