#1 Waitress Jessica Dunbar

When North Columbus Red Robin waitress Jessica Dunbar went into work recently she expected it to be no different than any other day but was surprised by the arrival of nine police officers who sat down for lunch in her station.

#2 A Rough Day

The mother of two and daughter of a retired police officer, Jessica could sense something was off with the group who came in for a quick lunch that afternoon. She decided to ask them if they had been having a rough day. That's when one of the officers said, "It's always a rough day when you've gotta put a brother in the ground."

#3 SWAT Officer Steven Smith

That is when it hit her that the 'brother' they were talking about was Officer Steven Smith, who had been shot days earlier is a standoff. She realized the group had just come from Smith's funeral services. Thousands of people and police from 120 jurisdictions all showed up to his funeral, as he was regarded as a true hero.

#4 A Deep Connection

Jessica felt a real connection with these officers, because of the way she was raised herself...causing her to think of how tragic it would have been to lose her father in the line of duty. She grew up watching her mother cope with a husband putting his life on the line every day, and she understands how this type of horrible tragedy could have happened to her own dad. Jessica knew she had to do something.

#5 She Had An Urge To Do Something

She just couldn't help but think of her own family, and how these officers risk their lives every day to protect others. She had no idea what she was going to do but then as she rang up their final receipt it became clear.

#6 A Simple Gesture

Jessica took it upon herself to cover their bill, as they had much bigger things to think about. She wrote a sweet thank-you note on the back and the officers could not believe what they read after they turned the bill over and read it aloud.

The gesture was heartfelt and helped ease the pain of both the officers and Jessica. "To have them shake my hand and say ‘thank you' to me, that was incredible," she recalled.
