A 90-year-old Widow With Nowhere To Turn As Her Home Crumbled Around Her
#1 The City Said Her House Was In Violation Of Codes After Neighbors Complained
Agnes Maples is a 90-year-old widow who lives alone. So when she was informed that she was going to soon face daily fines of up to $2500, she feared what the future would hold. Unable to get around, the elderly woman became depressed and fearful of what was going to happen to her and her home.
#2 Unable To Clean The Mess Herself, Her House Was Begining To Fall Apart
A relative had been dumping his trash at her house, leaving Agnes with his personal belongings and garbage for years. "I tried to get him to get it out. It was terrible. All kinds of garbage," Agnes said.
At the age of 90, Agnes could hardly walk, and she was unable to clear the garbage herself. Worse, her home was starting to deteriorate and the roof was leaking and had football-sized holes in it. With no air conditioning, she was often ill from heat exhaustion.
#3 She Gave A Local Humaitarian Organization A Call
After being fined and at her wits end, she thought to give a call to Operation Blessing, a non-profit humanitarian organization, after hearing about the group in church. They arrived and examined the situation, finding holes in the roof where animals were getting inside, no air conditioning, crumbling walls, and horrid living conditions. "It's a terrible situation to leave an elderly woman in," said the organization leader.
#4 They Sent In A Crew To Reconstruct Her Home
Crews began working on Agnes's home, pulling down a complete wall and rebuilding it, fixing the roof, and removing all of the trash and garbage that had built up over the years. Their goal was to make Agne's living situation comfortable and her home safe.
#5 Student Volunteers Arrived To Assist In The Renovations
The organization called in extra volunteers from Region University and the students not only removed all of the junk, but they also repaired and decorated Agnes's entire house. They built a brick bath, decorated her property with flowerbeds, and removed helped the construction crew with ridding the home of all the debris.
#6 They Surprised Agnes With One Final Gift
When the home was completely reworked, the crew gave Agnes the grand tour. "They asked me what I needed, she said."
"I said, please get me an air conditioner. So they surprised me with one," Agnes said. The volunteers wrapped it in pink paper and a ribbon, and Agnes squealed with delight upon opening the generous gift.
"I am truly blessed. They are angels," she cried.
