Many of us have experienced that sinking feeling at the checkout counter when the total for our pile of snacks turns out to be much higher than expected. It's a disappointing moment when we have to give up one of our favorite bags of chips just to save a couple of dollars.

However, things take a turn for the worse when even a simple grocery shopping trip starts to feel the financial strain. The situation becomes even more distressing than having our late-night snack choices limited.

With the ongoing economic challenges, buying our essential items from the store has become a tighter financial situation. The difficulties with the economy are impacting how we manage our shopping expenses.

To highlight the severity of the situation, a TikTok user named Carenstino decided to create a video demonstrating the reality of what $100 worth of groceries looks like for him.

Highlighting the struggle, he captioned the clip: “I’m literally shaking from shock… something needs to change.”

After going grocery shopping for ‘very basic’ items, he says: “This is getting out of hand. It’s to a point where people can’t live.”

On the wide kitchen counter, Carenstino lays out his groceries, which only take up a small space.  He elaborates that the combined cost of the items amounted to $100.

“You’re telling me this is $100? This isn’t even barely anything to feed me for a couple of days," he adds.

He presents the items, which consist of: a small packet of chicken, twelve eggs, rice, juices, body wash, deodorant, English muffins, stationery, and canned energy drinks.

“$100 for this? Excuse me?” he says to the camera, understandably, in disbelief.

Attempting to picture the cost of this shopping spree at your neighborhood grocery store probably won't lead to such a hefty total.

Admittedly, there's a possibility that he might have chosen items from a fancier store, where the prices could be somewhat higher. However, a full one hundred dollars still comes across as quite unbelievable.

Among the comments accompanying the video, TikTok users also expressed their surprise. One person shared their own experience, stating, "I used to make a family dinner six years ago for $40. The exact same dinner now costs $90."

Another added: “Grocery prices have become absurdly high.”

And one user even claimed: “We’ve literally hit the point where it’s now cheaper to eat out.”

Further suggestions were given by others, advising to consider shopping at Aldi or Trader Joe’s as a way to cut down on expenses.

According to the Consumer Price Index provided by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, grocery prices were reported to be 5.8 percent higher in May compared to the previous year. However, more recent data indicates that these prices have started to stabilize and decrease.
