The abandoned cars are thought to have a harrowing story behind them
While abandoned cars might not usually stand out, the story behind these particular ones is especially heartbreaking.
The photograph in question shows several cars parked at the Giants Stadium lot, just about 10 miles away from Manhattan, New York.
The image gives off an eerie feeling, particularly when you learn who these vehicles once belonged to.
According to reports, these cars were owned by people who lost their lives in the 9/11 attacks. Many had left their cars in the lot before commuting into the city.
With the tragic events of 9/11, the owners never returned to claim their vehicles.
The haunting photograph, though it isn’t clearly dated, has circulated widely online since the attack, along with the somber story behind it.
The image resurfaced on Reddit about three years ago, with many users describing it as 'depressing'.
One person commented at the time: "All these years later and this is the first time I've ever seen or heard about this. One of those things you would not normally consider."
Another user shared a similar reaction: "I've never seen this before either. Now I'm thinking about a lot of cars that people were looking forward to seeing after a long day at work. Sh*t's depressing."
"F**k. This is just sad," wrote someone else.
Another commenter went on to explain just how close the parking lot is to the site of the 9/11 attacks.
"Giants Stadium parking lot is huge, and much of it is used as a commuter parking lot for people to take the train to the city, or elsewhere," they explained.
"It's not that it's far from New York City, it's that parking in the city is very very expensive, so people park at the commuter lots for much less comparably, and take the train, or the bus. The cars that remained in the lot belonged to people that worked at the Trade Center or near it. Very sad."
Last month marked the 23rd anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. Even though over two decades have passed, the heartbreaking events continue to affect people to this day.
For instance, Inez Robertson, a survivor of the attacks, described the aftermath as something straight out of a zombie film.
She was at her job at an advertising agency in Midtown when the planes struck the towers, but initially, she didn’t realize it was a terrorist attack.
"It wasn't until I got up to the 19th floor where I worked... by then the second plane had gone in. And then we were told it was a terrorist thing," she remembered.
Understandably, everyone at her office was sent home.
Inez continued: "I was [walking] with somebody from my company, and we're just like, in shock. It was like in a movie. It was like a zombie movie or something."
