Jennifer and Dax Grooms noticed an injured dog in an alley.

They followed it, hoping to help, for nearly two hours.

Finally, the dog collapsed from fatigue.

The Grooms gave her water and alerted a rescue organization called Hope for Paws.

The rescuers slowly earned the dog's trust until she let them pet her.

Unlike many injured dogs, she seemed to relish being touched.

Hope for Paws determined that the dog, who they started to call Cadence, was likely a bait dog for dog fighting.

She needed serious medical attention, including emergency surgery to save her eyes.

Once Cadence was stabilized, the rescuers took another important step with her.

She was introduced to other dogs, like Chance, who licked Cadence's tender wounds.

Cadence is now living the good life with humans and a small pack of other rescue dogs.

Rescuing her was a major group effort, but who could argue that it wasn't worth it?
