Adam Sandler is taking a break from his signature comedy roles for his latest movie, "Spaceman."
After teasing audiences with a sneak peek last month, Netflix has now released the full trailer for this eagerly awaited film.
"Spaceman" follows astronaut Jakub, played by Sandler, who's on a six-month solo research mission at the edge of the solar system.
The synopsis reads, "Six months into a solitary research mission to the edge of the solar system, an astronaut, Jakub (Adam Sandler), realizes that the marriage he left behind might not be waiting for him when he returns to Earth."
The plot thickens as Jakub, desperate to mend his relationship with his wife, Lenka (played by Carey Mulligan), finds unexpected help from a mysterious creature he discovers on his spaceship.
"Hanuš (voiced by Paul Dano) works with Jakub to make sense of what went wrong before it is too late."
And in a surprising twist, the trailer reveals this 'mysterious creature' is actually a giant spider.
Fans might be as shocked as I was to learn that the creature is a spider.
But what's also catching attention is Sandler's move away from comedy to a more dramatic role.
His fans are showing their excitement.
One fan commented, "Adam Sandler is underrated in drama roles. He knocked it out of the park with Uncut Gems like Jim Carrey did in The Truman Show."
"The funniest people on the planet live in the darkest corners. I'm excited to see Sandler in a serious role again. I'm happy for him."
Another echoed the sentiment, saying, "I love the Adam Sandler classic comedies, but I'm so excited to see what more Sandler is bringing."
"He always continues to surprise me ever since he did Uncut Gems."
And another fan added, "I hope this turns out to be a good movie, I'm always looking forward to see Adam Sandler getting cast against type in a non-comedy role."
"Adding Carey Mulligan in the mix as part of the cast increases my interest."
"Spaceman" is set to premiere globally at the 74th Berlin International Film Festival starting February 15, before landing on Netflix on March 1.
The film is based on Jaroslav KalfaÅ™'s 2017 science fiction book, "Spaceman of Bohemia."
The book's synopsis reads:
"Orphaned as a boy, raised in the Czech countryside by his doting grandparents, Jakub Procházka has risen from small-time scientist to become the country's first astronaut."
"When a dangerous solo mission to Venus offers him both the chance at heroism he's dreamt of, and a way to atone for his father's sins as a Communist informer, he ventures boldly into the vast unknown."
"But in so doing, he leaves behind his devoted wife, Lenka, whose love, he realizes too late, he has sacrificed on the altar of his ambitions."
It remains to be seen how closely the film will stick to the novel's storyline.
