SOme people are lucky enough to form lifelong friendships early on in life. They experience many of life's important milestones together and, once they have grown up, share those same experiences with their families. Sometimes circumstances change and you end up drifting apart but for some friends, even that won't hinder things especially in today's connected world.
Everybody has someone they consider their best friend, but what would you do if you somehow found out your best friend was actually your sibling? Find out what happened when these two men made that shocking discovery after being friends for 60 years.
Lifelong Best Friends
Alan Robinson and Walter Macfarlane have been best friends since the day they met in 6th grade 60 years ago. The pair spent their years growing up together in Hawaii where they were practically inseparable. The boys were only 15 months apart in age. They would end up playing football together in college and enjoying a friendship that lasted a lifetime. These two childhood friends had no idea for the shocking revelation that lay in store for them.
They Never Knew Their Parents
The men spent their lives never knowing who their real parents were. Macfarlane never had a chance to find out who his real dad was, while Robinson was adopted at an early age.
Robinson touched on losing a brother early in life, saying: "I had a younger brother that I lost when he was 19, so I never had nieces or nephews. I thought I’ll never know my birth mother, I’ll never have any nieces or nephews."
Ancestry.com To The Rescue
Now here we are in 2017 and both men independently came to the decision to use Ancestry.com to try and locate their real parents and any siblings they may have had.
A Shocking Discovery Made
Cindy Macfarlane-Flores, Walter Macfarlane's daughter explained what happened next: "We started digging into all the matches he started getting. The top match was a person with the username 'Robi737' and the test showed they had several matches including identical X chromosomes, meaning there was a strong chance they were siblings."
Everything then clicked for Walter. Cindy continued explaining: "As a nickname, everybody called [Alan] 'Robi' and he flew 737s for Aloha Airlines, he was a pilot."
They Share The Same Mother
Robinson had been using the site to search for answers about his birth family and ironically Macfarlane had also used it to hunt down answers about his real dad. After a very emotional conversation over the phone, the two men realized that they had the same mom.
The Two Men Share Their Feelings
The two men shared their feelings with Macfarlane saying: "It was a shock."
Robinson agreed, adding: "Yeah, it was a shock, definitely. And then we thought about it and compared forearms."
"Yeah, hairy arms, that did it!," joked Macfarlane.
They Informed Family And Friends
The best friends-turned-siblings gathered their families and friends together in order to share the shocking news with them.
Robinson said: "It was an overwhelming experience, it’s still overwhelming. I don’t know how long it’s going to take for me to get over this feeling."
Making Family Plans
Macfarlane and Robinson are now planning to travel the world together and enjoy their retirement as the family neither man had growing up. Robinson told local reports: "This is the best Christmas present I could ever imagine having," a sentiment that his newly discovered niece, Macfarlane-Flores, completely agreed with saying: "It really is a Christmas miracle and we’re just so happy that we found it."
