When his grandparents passed away in Tennessee he went to clean up their old house. It was while trying to get a filthy stain out of the carpet that he discovered something that would change his life forever.
After His Grandparents Die, He Rips Up Their Old Carpet To Find A Hidden Safe In The Floor
#1 His Loving Grandparents Passed Away
John's grandparents were lovingly referred to as PopPop and Nana. He fondly remembers when they used to read Treasure Island to him as a kid, and how he one day hoped he would stumble upon a fortune of his own. But when his grandparent passed away suddenly, they left only one thing behind, their old farmhouse in Tennesee.
#2 He Went To Tennessee To Clean Out Their Home
John went to clean out the old place, which had fallen into disrepair since he had last visited and noticed something that he had never noticed there before. A door.
#3 He Discovered A Closet
When he opened the heavy door after breaking the locks, he noticed a very dirty carpet in what appeared to be just a small empty closet. He had never noticed it before, but then again, he was just a boy when he visited the house weekly.
#4 He Left The Closet For Last
After cleaning most of the old house he returned to the small closet and decided that the dirty, filthy carpet needed to be removed or cleaned. He scrubbed it several times but could not get it clean. So, he ripped the small square piece of material up.
#5 He Found Something Under The Carpet
That is when he discovered something that would change his life forever a hidden safe. He struggled with all of his might to open the safe but had very little luck.
#6 He Got Help Opening The Safe
He went through the local yellow pages and found a nearby locksmith, who came right over. Withing a few hours, they had the lock broken and the safe was opened. He was excited to learn the contents of the safe because he knew how much his grandparents had always loved to collect things.
#7 He Wasn't Very Impressed, At First
He found lots and lots of water and old bricks. Sort of bummed out that he did not find what he had hoped was inside, hidden treasures, he was about to close the safe back up and leave it alone.
#8 He Began Finding All Sorts Of Items
However, after digging a little deeper he discovered a time capsule from the 1930s! There was a coin book that was damaged on the outside but all of the money inside was in pristine condition. The book had a date on it from 1937, so of course, he dug deeper.
#9 He Found Books, Wallets, Knives, And More
After hauling out damp and soggy things like books, pocket knives, leather wallets, and other memorabilia, he realized there was practically no end to this hole in the floor.
#10 Within An Hour He Had A Table Full Of Great Finds
Before long he had a table full of treasures that he had discovered in his grandparent's floor safe. Picture, coins, report cards, working papers, and lots of cash.
#11 There Was Money, All Kinds Of Bills And Coins
He found money along with lots of other stuff. Lots of coins, more than he could count. The bills were wet and tattered, but still US Dollars from as far back as 1931.
#12 A Lot Of The Coins Were In Perfect Condition
Some of the coins were exceptionally rare and beautiful and most all were wrapped in a sealant for protection. A few of the coins were collectible items and preserved fairly well in original cases that were probably issued for the war by the banks.
#13 He Discovered A Small Trunk
Before long the money was being pulled out as fast as he could put his fingers on it. He then started finding guns, pistols, ammunition, gold bricks, silver medals, and... a small trunk.
#14 It Was A Box Full Of Treasures
To his surprise, the trunk was not locked, it was rusty and damp, but it opened up with one try. Inside, John could not believe what he found. It was not a trunk, but a jewelry case used to hold treasures for a long period of time. There were silver plates, diamond encrusted watches, emerald and diamond earrings, solid gold rings for both men and women, and passports that belonged to his great grandparents, held onto by his PopPop and Nana for years.
#15 He Sobbed As He Realized He Was Meant To Find His Lost Treasure
And then he spotted something that made his heart melt. Inside another rusty box, wrapped securely in waxed paper was the copy of Treasure Island that his grandparent's had read to him weekly while he was a child. It was worn and wet, but he knew it was the book that he held and dreamed about, and perhaps he thought, his PopPop and Nana hoped that he would finally discover his treasure.
